Matthew Shannon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2016.
Matthew Mark Shannon was born on September 6, 1959 in Portland, Oregon to Frank and Florence Shannon. In high school he played baseball, soccer, and was on the wrestling team.

While working for National Car Rental at the airport, Matt's head was turned by a co-worker, Tracy Chaney. It is rumored that he was so enamored with her that he once wrecked a car because he just couldn't look away. He married Tracy, the love of his life, on October 8, 1983 at First Christian Church in Portland. They honeymooned in Jamaica and Barbados where he learned that he could not keep up, comfortably, with Tracy's sunbathing.

In addition to a wife, Matt gained a second set of parents, with whom he remained very close until their passing. In 1986 his amazing wife gave birth to their wonderful son, Boe, completing their family. Matt loved to work in the yard and spent many weekends with Boe working alongside him. He also enjoyed the annual Allen/Shannon Campout with Boe and their neighbor as well as playing the X-box with Boe until he got motion sickness.

He was a lifelong Ducks fan and, because he loved his wife so much, converted from the Seahawks to the Vikings. He and Tracy took countless trips on their motorcycles but the trips to Glacier National Park, Niagara Falls, and a month-long cross county trip to Boston were his favorite. In addition to road trips, Matt enjoyed other travels with Tracy to places including a two week adventure to Australia (to accompany their good friends, Milton and Judy home) and several trips to Cozumel and Hawaii.

From an early age Matt knew he wanted to be a police officer. After graduating from Cleveland High School he became a Reserve Officer with the Oregon City Police Department. After completing the Monmouth Oregon Police Academy Matt was hired by the Irrigon Police Department (which consisted of him and the Chief). He served for almost a year in Irrigon before he was hired by the Hillsboro Police Department where he remained until his retirement on October 31, 2011.

On Saturday, September 17, 2016, Matt passed away in Hillsboro. He is survived by his beautiful wife, Tracy; the world's best son, Boe; his beloved sister, Susan, and eight other siblings; his cats, the beloved Puddy Tat and Chloe; and his friends (you know who you are).

During my time with Intel Corp I came to rely on Matt and the other members of the High Tech Crime Team for resolving a variety of theft cases. I spent spent a great deal of time with Matt at conferences in all over the country. His stellar investigative skills resulted in arrest and stolen product recovery in the millions of dollars. My heart felt sympathy go out to Tracy and Boe. I will always remember Matt as a competent, a good and a decent police officer, the kind of officer we more of.

Matty was a consummate professional, a lover of life and the badge, a generous friend and one of my heroes. Working with him so many years, the "golden years" at the PD, have made my career something special, something I value and treasure! You always knew where you stood with him and he was free with his "lovin you's"! He loved and adored his family and cared for all. If you were part of Matty's team, you knew without a doubt that he would have your back. I love and will miss you, Matty! And because he loved his family, we love them as our own as well!

Matt, you will be miss more than you know. I will never for get the times I rode with Matt as a cadet, the first time I got to run code 3 to back up a fellow officer. Matt let me drive as the call came out he turned on the light& siren and said "lets go!" We made it to the cal,l first ones there, BUT then Matt drove for the rest of the shift. LOL I think I might have scarred him a little Tracy. :-) Hugs to you and Boe.

Matt, I am writing this to you because I am stunned to learn of your recent passing. We had some great times in High School and of course the conversations we so cool as we became older and more mature in adult life. The 20 year reunion from CHS was how we reconnected. I learned that you were working along side many other Hillsboro Police officers who I also knew. I had such fun catching up with you on Facebook and telling some great stories. I am so sorry to learn that you are flying to Heaven ahead of me. But someday my friend, we will laugh again there. Sending love. Beth Almand

You were so loved, Matty. I will always remember our days of fighting crime and busting counterfeiters in Southern California with the HPD and Intel as a team. You brought many smiles to people's faces and warmed their hearts. I will miss you dear friend.
