Matthew Simmons Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 14, 2021.
Although his death was a tragic accident, Matty squeezed all he could out of life. He did not stay between the lines of anything that mattered to him, and his desire to be of service to others was his guiding principle. And he loved to dance. He didn't care where, when, with whom, or whether or not you thought he could, Matt just broke it down. The first born of three brothers, the world knew Matty was special early on. Without a tooth in his mouth, he was giving his mom directions from his car seat shortly after his first birthday. His Nana Roz saw his indefatigable work ethic as he scrubbed her kitchen floors, a toddler with sweat dripping off his brow. Just as he did throughout his life, he helped without even being asked. With a benevolent hand, he reigned over the Boys Academy playground in Albany, New York, until moving to Boca Raton. It was down there where Matty's interest with fashion and the music scene flourished. With his frosted tips, hard-earned gold chain and emerald green Saturn (from his tireless work as a Sandwich Artist at Subway), Matty blasted Master P, Cash Money Millionaires, and deep cuts from emerging techno DJs. While an affinity for the Backstreet Boys also entered his mixtape, his commitment to Southern rap was evident. After keeping GNC financially afloat with his weekly contributions, Matt's outer strength began to match his mental acuity. His near perfect score on the SATs and flawless GPA would next send him to Duke University. In Durham, North Carolina, Matty began to approach the party life of a college student with the same ferocity with which he pushed his cognitive abilities. Through these experiences he became interested in law and decided to trade one bar for another. As is the case with Matty, one degree was not enough to quench his thirst for knowledge. He graduated, laden with awards, from the University of Miami with a Juris Doctorate and MBA, then went off to Atlanta to make his mark. Matty litigated in a way that earned him the nickname, "The Cobra." He accrued a tenacious reputation in the legal world as a lawyer to be reckoned with, and he protected the friends and family he loved in the same way. As his professional presence grew, so did his social life. His fast cars and flair could rival that of Mötley Crüe. This lead Matty to become a solo artist, opening his own firm, Simmons Litigation Law. Matty is survived by his mother, Barbara, his father, Mark, his brothers, Tommy and his wife Brooke, Petey and his wife Sera, their son, who will carry Matty's monogram, Mason James, and all his friends who love him. I just learned of Matt's passing (I knew him as Matt) from a mutual connection at the Albany Academy. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Matt was one of my good buddies when we were just little kids in Albany. I was so envious of him having moved to Boca, where I happen to live now. I remember him calling Barbara and Mark by your first names. Something I tried with my own parents for a while thereafter. I recall how bright he was and how quick his wit was. May his memory be a blessing.

I knew Matty for a very short time, however from the day I met him he was the sweetest soul and it was evident he truly cared about the people in his life. Hearing the news was devastating, my heart goes out to the family.
Rest Easy Matty, you were the best dance partner and you are missed.

Matty was an incredible help at hoffbrouhous ST. Louis in Belleville Illinois as well, the staff that met him will never forget his contagious smile and great efforts on their behalf.

I have only know Matty for a year, but i was moved by his willingness to share of his time and knowledge to support and encourage a worthy cause!
There are too few like him and his passing leaves a huge void - a legacy to a life well lived.

Dear Barbara and Mark, what a picture you have painted! I so wish I had known Matt, but it is clear he was a magnet if you were anywhere in his orbit. I hope as you gather in his honor with family and friends, you feel much love, including his. All the Razook's are sending our love your way as well. Perhaps you will make your way to Lake Placid, a healing place if there ever were one.

I hated to hear this news. I was fortunate enough to know Matt professionally as a fellow attorney in Atlanta. The Matt I knew was smart, charismatic, and kind. A great storyteller. Full of energy. I always enjoyed my visits with him. He will be missed.

I never met Matt and only have spent about 15 days, in total, with his brother, Tommy, while he was a Peace Corps Volunteer. That was enough time to recognize Tommy as one of the most vibrant souls on earth. His ability to light up a room and make anyone and everyone feel special is unmatched. Like any little brother who looks up to his big brother, I can only assume that the traits which enable Tommy to inject love into the world, wherever he goes, were developed from a lifetime spent trying to be just like his big brother. Like I said, I never met Matt, but if Tommy is a reflection of him, I can only imagine what an incredible man he is. All my love and best wishes to the entire family and all those who are lucky enough to know Matt.

There are just no words BIG enough to describe the kind, selfless, caring, inclusive, outgoing, smart, funny, exuberant person that was Matty. May your memories live on in the minds of all you have touched and May your spirit dance free with the angels The heavens are blessed to have you... until we meet again.

Matty - my friend, my confidante, my birthday buddy - I've been devastated since I heard the news. However...much like your presence in life, your passing brought people together. I have had more communication with your friends in the last week than I had with many while in person with you. You were so loved and adored, and it's showing with people coming together. And I got to meet your family! I loved hearing the (non-surprising) stories about you as a child and they definitely pointed to the amazingly smart, talented adult you grew up to be. I'm honored to have had you in my life - your loss has been so hard for me, my kids, Tyler, and all of my friends who got to know you over the time of our friendship. I love you and miss hearing "I love you Red!" at the end of every call. I'm sorry I didn't get to say goodbye, but we will honor your legacy forever.
