MATTHEW WHALEN Obituary
Age 35, of Pittsburgh, unexpectedly on Monday, December 21, 2015. Loving husband of Hannah P. Gradisar; beloved son of Patricia (Bob) Theobald Strack and Rex B. (Kathy) Whalen; loving father of Logan, Mattix, Sadie and Jake; brother of Jeffrey (Carol) Whalen and Rand (Malinda Turner) Whalen; and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who will mourn his passing. Mattthew was a 1998 graduate of Keystone Oaks High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army after 9/11. He served four combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. SSG Whalen served the majority of his service with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division. Family and friends welcome 1-8 p.m. Thursday, WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE (412-563-2800) 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp., 15220. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. Friday in St. Anne's Church, 400 Hoodridge Dr., Pgh., PA 15234. Burial with full military honors National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations suggested to Camp Valhalla, 13625 Neutron Road, Dallas, TX 75244.

What a tremendous person. We were friends growing up in Castle Shannon but havent talked since h.s. After seeing this video and reading about his accomplishments its amazing to see how 1 person can touch so many lives. My prayers go out to his family. I know the term hero gets used alot these days, but Matt truely deserves to be called a "hero".
