Matthew Whitmer Obituary

Published by Contra Costa Times from Nov. 14 to Nov. 23, 2008.
On Your First Angelversary Matthew "Mattie" Chase Whitmer May 28, 1987 ~ November 15, 2007 Resident of Hercules Mattie had a passion for life with a refreshing attitude and perspective, an extraordinary sense of humor, and a love of adventure. He graduated in 2005 from John Swett High School. At age 16 he was a Student Ambassador for the People-to-People Program which toured England, Wales and Ireland. He was a First Class Boy Scout and was inducted to the Order of the Arrow. His interests varied widely and he learned to play drums, speak Japanese and write poetry. He loved sushi and pesto, bonfires at Ocean Beach, biking and running and video games. He adored the family pets, Rocky, Shelley, Itty Bitty Kitty and Zulu Maru. He found a calling in massage therapy which exemplified his inner desire to help people on many levels and was due to graduate in February 2008. Matthew leaves behind those who miss his smile, his laughter and his fabulous hugs: His parents, Mark and Dayna Whitmer of Hercules, CA; his brother, David Whitmer, and David's fiancée, Hilary Musson of Carmichael, CA; his Grandmother, Maralyn Atkins and Grandparents Marione and Richard Silverman; his Aunts and Uncles, Keith Atkins, Kevin and Therese Atkins, Carrol and Henry Cohen, Linda Donsky, Debra and Mark Graham, Dianne and Richard Hoffman, and Dale Russell; and numerous loving cousins and friends. He is sorely missed by the Cash-Dean-Jarrell, Eckman, Jorgenson, Pratt, Robertson and Fowler-Updegraaf families. Donations may be made in Matthew's memory to The Bridge Rail Foundation at bridgerail.org.
