MAUDE DAVIS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 21, 2021.
DAVIS--Maude Sergeant. Daughter of the late Maude Bouvier Davis and John E. Davis of New York City and Ridgefield, CT. She was born in New York City on November 21, 1934; deceased March 4, 2021. Maude was born and raised in New York City, educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, NYC, Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT, received her BA at Smith College in Northampton, MA, and her MA at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Maude began her career of teaching at the Brearley School in NYC from 1959-1998. Maude dedicated her 39-year career to teaching reading to younger children. She was passionate about her teaching and inspired greatness in many of her students throughout her career. Ms. Davis was devoted to the arts through the years and enjoyed the Metropolitan Opera, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and New York Philharmonic. Maude was truly adored by everyone in her life, from her family and her friends to her doormen at her Upper East Side apartment. She was a sweetheart to anyone who knew her and we will all remember her as a kind and generous friend who was always a pleasure to be around. Maude Davis had one brother, John Hagy Davis, who is deceased and Maude is survived by many loving cousins.

We dated for a while Maudie was at Smith. I much enjoyed her company. She was intelligent and interested in world events. And she had those entrancing dark brown eyes. I hope she passed away peacefully. Charles Monaghan

Maude was a wonderful conversationalist. I remember a lunch we had at the Metropolitan Museum of art in the private dining room. She was a kind, generous, selfless person and a good sister to her brother John Davis, a prominent author, who was also a dear friend of mine. May her spirit rest in peace.
