Rubin, Maurice Harvey
Maurice Harvey Rubin, an Ophthalmologist, medical school professor, inventor and lifelong scholar died on November 28th at his home in Scottsdale, AZ. He was 93. Dr. Rubin's tender devotion to his family, friends and patients was matched by his passion for learning, exploring and teaching. Harvey taught at the University of NC-Chapel Hill and Stanford medical schools for a combined period of 35 years. He was a guest professor at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem where he taught micro surgery and gave a course in China to teach new procedures in cataract surgery in the 1970's. He practiced ophthalmology in Greensboro, N.C for 30 years and then at the Shepard Eye Clinic in Santa Maria, Ca. where he taught foreign ophthalmologists. He was committed to civil rights, civic duty and supported causes to help improve the environment and Jewish institutions. He was never without a book to share, a joke to tell, a friend to hike with or a new hobby to master. He loved the sea and sailing. If you stepped into his office, you'd find photographs of family beach trips and world travels with his wife Gerry, a Heard Museum Docent name badge, new subjects to master from comparative literature to Chinese cooking (who knew you could roast spareribs on hooks carved from wire coat hangers?). Harvey will be dearly missed by his soulmate, fellow adventurer and loving wife of 46 years. He was a devoted father to Joan Blasberq. Karen Schudson, Susie Martin, Ruth Sperling, Dr.Carol Rappaport, Andy Grolnick and Laura Waldman. He shared enthusiasm for learning and commitment to family with the 17 grandchildren he cared so deeply for: Jessica Friedrichsen, Stephanie Willoughby and Michelle Cagwin; Ben Shalva and Joel Schudson; Rachel Overdevest and Brian Martin; Juliet, Maddie and Dash Sperling; Sofia and Adam Rappaport; Jordana, Noah and Zoe Grolnick;Nicole and Lindsey Waldman. Dr. Rubin took deep joy in his 13 great grandchildren as well. Services will be held at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuaries on Monday, December 4th at 10:30 A.M.
