MAURICE SEGALL Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 18 to Jan. 22, 2023.
SEGALL, Maurice A Life of Achievement and Generosity Maurice Segall, born in Joliette, Canada, May 16, 1929, passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on January 16, 2023, in Needham, Massachusetts. Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, he was predeceased by his wife, Sarah (Ostrovksy) Segall. Maurice began his long and illustrious academic and business career as an Economist with the Canadian Government after graduating with Honors from McGill University in Montreal. He also earned a Master's Degree from Columbia University in New York and did graduate work at the London School Of Economics. In 1955, he became Executive Assistant to the President of Steinberg's Limited in Montreal, and in 1961, JC Penney himself recruited Maurice to be the Director of JC Penney's Treasury Store Division and Director of Operations in New York. He joined American Express in 1970 where he became Executive Vice President of American Express with general management authority over the Credit Card Division, where he left his mark as the key figure in the redevelopment of the Card. In 1978, Maurice became Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Zayre Corporation in Massachusetts where he turned the Company around, created BJ's Wholesale Club, and expanded the TJ Maxx division, among other achievements. Maurice remained active after his retirement and was a Senior Advisor to the Boston Consulting Group as well as a Senior Lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge, MA. He was a devoted and loved teacher bringing his real world experience into the classroom. He sat on many corporate Boards such as Shawmut National Corporation, American Airlines (where he chaired the Compensation Committee), Harcourt General, New England Telephone, and along with his wife was a Trustee of Massachusetts General Hospital, the Beth Israel Hospital, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Maurice and Sarah were loyal Democrats, often donating money to political campaigns. Maurice was not just a successful executive and academic, but also an avid tennis player with a wicked forehand. He was an enthusiastic golfer with an accurate wedge, and an outstanding poker player who could compete against the best, which was his passion. His children hope that when he passed, he was dreaming of holding a Royal Flush, with a full complement of chocolate wafers and ice cream by his side. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth, Eric and Peter Segall, and their spouses, James Sagui, Lynne Segall and Jacqueline Segall; and his six grandchildren, Jessica, Andrew, David, Madeline, Sara and Kai Segall. Maurice's keen intellect, sense of humor, generosity, smile and sparkling eyes will be sorely and deeply missed, always. Services will be private.

Maurice was very generous with his involvement on the Board at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, where Sarah graduated. We always appreciated his business insights based on his enormous wealth of experience and expertise, as well as his good humored acceptance of our small but important enterprise. My condolences to Maurice and Sarah's children and extended family.

I met Maurice at the poker table and found him to be among the classiest people I ever met. His intellect was a refreshing change from the typical player. We became friendly, and, I enjoyed our discussions over an occasional dinner. I will miss him.

Maurice and I were fellow residents at North Hill Needham for over 6 years and enjoyed one another's company. He was very special: inquisitive, compassionate, and full of good humor. His life was amazing and very blessed by accomplishments in business, academia, and charitable ventures as well as by a superb wife and family. At North Hill he gave more talks in our Friday Night Forums than any other resident - all on a different topic that he had researched. I will long miss and never forget this man with whom I had such a good friendship and stimulating conversations - I always wanted more. My faith convinces me that God has a special place in heaven for people like Maurice; I feel sure he is enjoying it with Sarah.

I had the pleasure of working with Maurice at Zayre many years ago as the chief human resources executive. He was a brilliant and compassionate leader and was instrumental in the transformational growth of the company with founding of TJ Maxx and the acquisition of Marshalls.
Sending sincere condolences to his family.

We are saddened by the loss of our friend Maurice. We spent great times at 1140 Beacon Street where Sarah and I shared our passion for psychoanalysis and Maurice regaled us with stories from Foxwoods!
Our deepest condolences to all the Segal family.

Reading of Maury´s passing, a flood of memories assails me. As a (somewhat) younger new trustee at the MFA, Maury extended a hand of friendship, and his warm smile and voice of support always lifted me up. Any room was warmer because of his presence, and any discussion was that much more enlightened because of his insights and his humor. Losing his sweet Sarah was such a blow to him, and to all of us, but her carried on with dignity and generosity. May both of their memories be a blessing to all who knew and loved this dear couple.

Regretfully, I never had the pleasure of meeting Maurice. However, I believe I know a great deal about the quality of his character through my relationship with his son Eric. From this, I see Maurice as a man of honor and integrity and a contribution to the lives of those he touched along his path. May his light continue to shine.

To my Segall cousins, with whom we share a bond that started with Jack and Adela when they came to Canada as immigrants from Romania - please accept our condolences on the loss of your dad. May you be spared further sorrow.
