PALAYEW, Max Jacob M.D., F.R.C.P.(C)
It is with infinite sadness that the family of Dr. Max Palayew announces his death on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, after a brief illness. Husband of Eunice Goodman. Father and father-in-law of Dr. Mark Palayew and Dr. Chris Greenaway, Dr. Karen Palayew and Lorne Segal, Danny Palayew and Jocelyn Kapusta. Grandfather of Noah, Matthew, and Julie Segal; Adam, Michael, and Nathan Palayew; Steven and David Palayew. Brother and brother-in-law of Noreen and Aaron Lipsin, Chana Palayew, Mildred Goodman and the late Clermont Pepin, the late Rosalie and the late Norman Namer.
He was an extraordinary man; a superb radiologist, a devoted and inspiring teacher, but above all a kind, giving, and compassionate human being. He was a role model and mentor to many of his students, colleagues, and friends; to his family he was and will always be their strength and inspiration.
He received his medical degree from l'Université de Montpellier in France and subsequently trained in Radiology at the Jewish General Hospital, the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and the Cincinnati General Hospital. In 1971 he was appointed Radiologist-In-Chief at the Jewish General Hospital, a position which he held until 1992. He was appointed Professor and Chairman, Department of Radiology, McGill University for consecutive terms from 1977 to 1987. In 2009 he was appointed Emeritus Professor, McGill University.
He was a member of numerous professional associations and held Officer roles in many, including National President of the Canadian Association of Radiologists and Administrator of the Board of the Corporation Professionnelle des Médecins du Québec. He was a frequent Visiting Professor at universities throughout North America, Europe and Asia. He received many honours, including the Prix Albert Jutras, awarded by the Société Canadienne Française de Radiologie, "in recognition for an outstanding career and exceptional contributions to Radiology".

I learned about Max's passing when I was reading this morning the book about the JGH by Dr. Frank Guttman. The news was a shock and a profound sadness for me. Max was sweet, gentle, sensitive and a true and real mensch. There are simply not enough of his kind of person on this planet. One of the best people I've met in my lifetime. Sharing the sadness of the loss with all who loved him.

Dear Mark and family. I just learned of Dr.Palayew passing when I popped into radiology today. I worked with him for the past 25 years. When he retired and took his amazing trip he came to see me not long after and regaled me with amazing storys. He was so wonderful to me. I was his techie in the hospital library. He was kind respectful and showed me respect. He would just call me to chat sometimes. I could hear his smile in his voice. I will miss him forever

I will miss his energetic stride walking through the Jewish General with a smile to acknowledge mine. He was my dad's customer for many years and later his empathy shown to him was most comforting to him and us. He leaves a legacy of excellence in his abilities and as a humane doctor that his family should always be so proud of. May these qualities offer your family solace.

1978......"Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass,
of glory in the flower,
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind."

From an old, old friend. Max and I were neighbours and friends. We went through Peretz Shule together, as well as through Baron Byng and McGill. Though we pursued separate careers, we greeted each other extremely warmly, on the rare times we met. How could it be otherwise?
My wife Eleanor and I would like to express our sincerest and heartfelt sympathies to the Palayew Family. My memories of Max will never be forgotten.

He was indeed a kind and lovely man, when I worked at the JGH I was introduced to him at a hospital event, he never stopped going out of his way to say hello to me afterwards in the hallway or introduce me to other employees at the hospital. A great man and I am truly sorry and saddened to hear he is no longer with us.
