Visitation will be held at COURTICE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1587 Highway #2, Courtice (905-432-8484) on Thursday August 13, from 12 to 1 p.m. with Memorial Service at 1 p.m. Donations may be made to Palliative Care at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville. I live beside Mel and Viney and have been thankfully to have met and enjoyed quick conversations and long ones and a few drinks. My deepest condolences to Viney and the family. I will miss you Mel the world has lost a truly great person.

Worked with Mel for 25 yrs + chatted every morning if only for a minute or 10 sometimes, we learned about each others families and kids,grand kids and vacations out East. He was a joy to talk to, will miss him and his quirky comments. Debby

Growing up in Oshawa as a kid, I couldn't wait to visit uncle Mel on Halloween. He always had the spookiest decorations that went completely over the top. I wonder how many cousins and friends can say uncle Mel taught them to waterski behind the brown boat? I remember my first time, terrified of landing in the weeds of Lake Chemong his advise to me was "guess you better not fall then"! I will miss his straight shooting, common sense, no nonsense, smart witty responses and that mischievous twinkle in his eye. I can hear his healthy voice and see him stomping around the dance floor so clearly in my head - these are the memories I will hold dear. Thanks for being a great big brother to my mom and such a strong link in our family chain. Love you uncle Mel. I feel blessed to have been with you at the end and can rest knowing your suffering is over. RIP uncle, you earned your rest with a life well-lived.

There are so many memories I don't know where to start... But the memory that stands out the most was when I came up to visit and you filled up the birdfeeder and red juice spilled on to Aunt Vine's white carpet and you said if she noticed you were going to tell her it was me...

Vinnie, Rose and I are so sorry to hear of your loss. Melvin was a very close childhood friend. I have many fond memories of our lives together in Newburnt. We spent many hours catching Connors down on the wharf as well as flying kites. I have often spoken of him over the years and I cherish those memories. Melvin was a loyal and trustworthy friend.
