Melvin Desy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 20, 2025.
Melvin Arthur Desy, affectionately known as "Ted," passed away on January 8, 2025, in Upland, California, at the age of 78.

Born on March 20, 1946, in Sioux City, Iowa, Ted grew up on a farm in Greenwood, Iowa. As a young man, he participated in 4H, ran cross country, and worked as a lifeguard. A big family man from the start, Ted was one of 6 children born to Albert and Martha Desy. He also had 4 half-siblings.

Ted proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for six years as a boiler tender aboard destroyers such as the USS Decatur, including during the Vietnam War. After his service, he moved to Southern California, where he married and raised three daughters while embarking on a 30-year career with RTD (now LA Metro). Ted specialized in supervising body shops and bus mechanics across several divisions within Los Angeles County. In the early 80's, he moved to Alta Loma, remarried, and became a stepfather to two daughters. He retired from Metro at the age of 60.

Ted had a passion for fishing, boating, cooking, woodworking, horseback riding, and camping. He enjoyed listening to old-time country music and gospel hymns and was an avid fan of football, hockey, baseball, and television shows like "Yellowstone" and "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." He admired celebrity chefs Emeril Lagasse and Jacques Pépin.

Ted is survived by his loving wife Joanne; daughters Keri (Marshall); Kim (Tim); Lauri; Anessa (Glenn); eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his brother Marvin (Pam); numerous cousins, nieces, nephews; and his cherished cats. He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Martha; eight siblings; daughter Sheri; one grandson; and his beloved dog "Happy."

He was a strongly opinionated, passionate man, very funny, told great stories, and gave the best hugs. Ted's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
