I knew Mel for only 10 days while serving on a sequestered jury from Waupaca County that came to serve on a murder trial in FDL in 1991. I recently came across a "diary" of sorts that I kept during those days and it made me think of this very special man. I never saw him after the trial, returning to Clintonville to continue on with life, but I never forgot this good, kind, decent man who made our 10 days in FDL a much more memorable experience. Seldom does someone make an impression like he did with me. Well done though good and faithful servant.

To the Heller family, especially David,

my condolences prayers are with you in this time. Dad (Fritz Krueger - Juvenile Officer) spoke well of Mel as the chief and appreciated his leadership of the FdL Police force. May he rest in peace surrounded by God's love.

On behalf of the staff and tenants at St. Francis Terrace: Condolences to Mel's Family. He will be remembered by many of the staff, tenants and tenants families. His goal was to help get the tenants out of their room to get involved with the many activities we have. He was able to do this with many tenants. He loved the staff and the staff loved him. He was always thankful to have his home with us, freely expressing this thanks to the staff, tenants and our many guests. "Chief, we all will miss you. You have a special place in many of our hearts."

My sympathy to the Heller Family. When I started my career at the Fond du Lac Police Dept., this fine young man was the Chief. I had the opportunity to work with Mel only for 4 years and at that time he retired. Mel was a stellar man of authority, a stern man in that position, a excellent role model, he "ran a good ship." Even though I was a very young age, he cared for ALL his staff and shared conversation with all. Even after retirement when I would see him at Salty's he still shared "the ole days" conversations of the police department. Rest in Peace Mel, you were a strong man of character and a humble man.

My sympathy to all of you. Your Dad was an amazing man. He always treated our family well. He told the best stories - could listen to him for hours! What a life he lived, you should be so proud! Im honored to call him my uncle.

With all my love and sympathy,
Andy
