ENFIELD, CT - Melvin "Mel" J. Hutchins, Jr., 61 of Enfield, beloved husband of Rosemary (Cirillo) Hutchins passed away peacefully at his home on Friday May, 16, 2003 surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born Mar. 14, 1942 in Hartford, CT, the son of the late Melvin J. Sr. and Virginia L. (Johnson) Hutchins. Mel grew up in East Hartford and had lived in Enfield for the last 20 years. A longtime employee of the John Harland Co. in Enfield, and recently Turf Products Corp. in Enfield. He was the President of the Firecrackers Bowling League and Vice President of the Shifters Car Club. Mel had also founded and served as President of the Rainbow Strollers Square Dance Club. He was very active in the community. His greatest pleasures came from dressing up as cartoon characters in Enfield's Fourth of July Parade and working with the special citizens associated with the Mark Channel Society of which he was a board member. Mel enjoyed NASCAR racing, spinning 50's & 60's records as a disc jockey, attending cruise nights in his 1954 Plymouth Savoy, and was extremely passionate about the UCONN Woman's basketball team, whom he referred to as "my girls". A loving and devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Mel leaves five children, Diane Truong and her husband, Bang of East Hartford, Tracey Hutchins of Pahrump, NV, Scott Nozik and his wife, Sharon of Stafford Springs, Rocco Nozik of Enfield, and Carrie Hutchins of Pahrump, NV, five grandchildren, a sister, Barbara Hutchins of Colchester, a brother, Allan "Butch" Hutchins of Magnolia DE, his mother in law, Nellie Cirillo of Enfield and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Funeral services for Mel will be held on Wed. May 21, 2003 at 10 am from Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels 43 Shaker Rd. Enfield, followed by a Funeral Service in St. Mary's Episcopal Church 383 Hazard Ave. Enfield at 11 am. Burial will take place in the Hazardville Cemetery Enfield. Mel's family will receive relatives and friends on Tues. May 20, 2003 from 4 to 8 pm at the funeral home. Memorial donations in his memory maybe made to the Mark Channel Fund C/O Alice Langley 3 Beech Rd. Enfield, CT 06082, the Shriners Hospital for Children 516 Carew St. Springfield, MA 01104-2396 or the American Cancer Society 538 Preston Ave. Meriden, CT 06450-1104.
