Mel was larger than life - kind, humble, humorous, insightful. He was the picture of a true Christian - with an emotional depth that few could rival. He didn't suffer fools gladly and he was always speaking the truth whether anyone wanted to hear it or not - but most did - because he carried with a great sense of wisdom. His words were gifts to anyone who heard him. His teaching gift was penultimate. He could reach everyone because he understood their hearts. I am in grief and shock at his passing. A truly bright light has gone out - but he has left a lasting legacy in all those whom he taught, preached to or befriended. Shine on Mel!

I am so very sorry to hear of Mel's death, way too soon. I worked with Mel at Lutherwood, and our paths crossed many times. It was with great sadness that we received the news that Mel had died. It was in the Rose home that we were introduced to the Jigg's Dinner. Mel roasted the best turkey ever as part of that experience. Mel also was a regular at our kitchen table for a monthly Clergy Breakfast, adding his humour and story telling to the gathering. To Julia and the rest of the family, may you continue to celebrate Mel as a wonderful gift of God's creation. God bless you in your memories.

We're incredibly shocked and saddened to hear this heartbreaking news. Rev. Mel was our minister and baptized both our girls. We were drawn to him immediately... his warmth, kindness & open heart were impossible to forget. We forged a wonderful relationship & I would often wait until folks cleared after service so we could have a quick undisturbed chat. This typically consisted of me sharing about our girls and him about his grandchildren (the newest instalment especially!) & it never went without some brand of his hilariousness and me in stitches.
Thinking of a world without Mel in it is a devastating thought... but despite our overwhelming sadness I Stay reminded of how blessed we were to have known him, even if just for a short while. I'll miss his sermons - which somehow all ended up with a lesson learned back in Newfoundland (!), his laugh and most of all what a beautiful soul he was.
We're sending the Rose family and all who were close to Mel all of our love. We hope that knowing how many lives he touched... all of us who loved him & found comfort & joy in his words... and all of us who will never forget him will bring you some comfort and maybe, one day, even joy.
May God bless you all...
Until we meet again our dear Rev. Mel... xo

Dear Julia,
Brenda and i were shocked and saddened by the sudden passing on of your beloved Mel( As we called him).
In the early 2000, when Mel,yourself and your family opened your house to strangers(Medical Student Doctors from Uganda), i was among the many you welcomed and cared for as if your own, we found a home in your family and you both found a place in OUR hearts forever.
Since i met yourself and Mel in 2006, you have been a part of my life, faith and journey even as i moved back to Canada and started a new life.
Mel counselled me, loved me, and guided me always in faith, love and life.
I have come to learn that "to live is to love, and to love is to live abundantly" this describes Mel.
He will be dearly missed, but he will live with us always.
Until we meet again, our dearest Mel.
Your friends,
Asa& Brenda Ahimbisibwe

My condolences on Mel's passing. I had the pleasure of working with him as one of 3 people on a Conference chosen task force a number of years ago, and appreciated his thoroughness combined with his gentleness when doing that work. Our drives to Hamilton were a way to hear some of those stories about his childhood. When someone like Mel dies, it is truly a shock to know that you will not be in his presence again.
