Melvin Spencer Sr.

Melvin Spencer Sr. was born on November 13, 1937 to the late Willie and Margaret Spencer in Nigton. Melvin was a graduate of Temple High School in Diboll and attended Texas College in Tyler. He was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Lufkin. He was a faithful member of his Sunday school class. After more than 40 years, he retired from Texas Foundry. Melvin enjoyed hunting and spending time relaxing with his family. In 1957, Melvin married the love of his life Lillian Coutee. They were married for 57 years and had seven children: Sheron Spencer Adams, Jerry (Della) Spencer, and Cathryn ,Spencer Johnson all of Lufkin, James Spencer of Amarillo, Melvin (Anita) Spencer of Louisville, Ky., Donna Spencer, Wilma (Chuck) lsaac, all of Tyler. There are 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren left to carry on Big Daddy/PawPaw's legacy. His brothers and sisters are Willie C. (Evelyn) Spencer, Archie Faye Spencer, Lela Spencer and Charles (deceased) (Stella) Spencer, all of Houston, Leroy (Morteal) Spencer, Freddie (Vernell) Spencer, Lorraine (Elmer) Mark, and Barney Spencer of Nigton; sisters- in-law, Lola Hamilton and Edna Coutee of Lufkin; brothers-in-law, John (Helen) Coutee of Austin, Gerald (Racheal) Coutee of Lufkin, Joe (Evelyn) Coutee of Jefferson, Ind. His surviving aunts are Elise Jones and Virgie Spencer of Lufkin, and uncle Charles Daniels of Los Angeles, Calif. Melvin leaves a wealth of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Services for Melvin Spencer Sr. will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the First Missionary Baptist Church, 410 Scarbrough. Burial will follow in the Nigton Memorial Park in Nigton. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church. Colonial Mortuary, directors.
