VESELY
MELVIN NORMAN
On Friday, November 23, 2012, Melvin Norman Vesely, of Cranberry Township and formerly of Baldwin Borough, died of lymphoma. Loving husband of the late Nancy Perry Vesely; beloved father of Carol Ann Vesely and Edward P. Vesely; and beloved grandfather of Shannon Vesely, Brian Farr and Paige Vesely. Mel was born on December 7, 1925 and was the second child of John and Agnes Vesely of Pittsburgh. The family, including older brother Edward, was active in Troy Hill Presbyterian Church. Melvin graduated from Oliver High School in 1943. He served in World War II (87th Infantry Division) and received a Purple Heart. After earning his BS and MS degrees from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951, Mel began a long and distinguished career in education at the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Mel combined his sense of humor with innovative teaching to inspire his math students at Herron Hill and Carrick High Schools. Later he served as an administrator and as principal at Overbrook Elementary School. Mel loved music, theater organ and the arts. In his golden years, Mel took up jogging and ran in the Pittsburgh marathon at age 63. In keeping with his motto "exercise is the magic pill", Mel continued to run in the Pittsburgh Great Race until age 85, when he came in second in his age group. At 86, he still claimed to be a "kid at heart". His sense of humor, optimism, inquisitive mind, generosity and zest for life were an inspiration to all who knew him. A Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community, 100 Norman Drive, Cranberry Twp., PA 16066. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Sherwood Oaks Scholarship Fund.

As a student of Mr. Vesely at Carrick High from 1957-59, I enjoyed a learning experience that changed my life. He saw the mathematician in each of us and taught us to value each others contributions. I'm grateful to have known him.

Mel and his wife were very special friends of ours. Bill, Joe and Mel grew up together at church. He and Joe were instrumental in introducing me to my husband Bill. Bill was a part of his wedding to Nancy. They became neighbors after marriage and we remained very close friends through the years. He was very wonderful and kind and will never be forgotten

On October 13, our Carrick High School class had our 50th reunion, and of course we invited Mel. He responded immediately to the invitation I sent to him, visited with us during the evening, and sent a lovely thank you note. I am so blessed to have had a wonderful conversation with him that night. He was such an optimistic, fun-loving, nice man. His picture is in the Carrick Alumni Bulletin, which will be a lovely rememberance for us all.

The officers and members of the Pittsburgh Chapter of Retired School Employees are saddened to learn of Mel's passing. He had been an active member of the Chapter for over 26 years, attending most of our functions. He will always be remembered for his tireless work with the Pittsburgh Schools by those of us that worked with him.

Mel not only was the most congenial person I have ever known, but he was a mathematician extraordinaire, a credit to the Pittsburgh School System. Even in retirement, I was fortunate enough to enjoy his companionship and delight in his friendship. God rest his soul in peace.

Just learned that I have lost an extraordinary friend that I met through the love of the theatre organ. Spent time with this kind, caring, fun guy at the ATOS conventions and had my first New York City burger with Mel at a little street joint after landing there.
I will always remember Mel's giggle which is just like my grandson's. Mel was a long time supporter of The Pittsburgh Area Theatre Organ Society. Everyone there will miss him, especially me. Anyone who had the opportunity to know Mel was enriched by that experience.
My sincerest condolences to his family. I'm glad he got to spend some time in California last July. He was so excited to go there and he truly enjoyed his visit with his daughter.

So sorry to hear of the passing of this very kind and caring man. Our families always knew each other. Mel and I re-connected some years ago looking at his family tree and were happily surprised to find a connection through Regina Marusek. Sending my sincere condolences to the Vesely family.

i consider myself fortunate to have been a friend of Mel's for over 50 years. We and others enjoyed lunch almost every month for the past 19 years since my retirement. I can tell you that your Dad was highly respected by everyone who ever met him. A man of skill, intellegence and integrity. We will miss him. You have our sympathy. I know Mel is with the Lord, May he forever rest in peace.
