Dr. Meredith Lamar Kilgore

I have only just learned of Meredith's passing. I was so grateful for his support and encouragement during my time at UAB. His ability to linking his old life in clinical medicine to his life at the school of public health was a rare combination. He was an amazing teacher, energetic and motivating. I will miss him, an outstanding mentor and a wonderful man.

Julie, I was so sad to hear of Meredith's passing. He was a wonderful mentor to me while I established my second career, and I will always be grateful for his guidance and support. I sincerely regret that such a benevolent soul is no longer with us.

I only new Dr. Kilgore for a few short years. He interviewed me and gave me an opportunity at SOPH. I am greateful for that. I very much enjoyed working with him and the discussions that we had. Very nice individual and easy to talk with. I am truly sorry for your loss.

Very sad to hear that Meredith passed away. While at RAND, I knew him as a very easy-going fellow grad student. He had an extraordinary ability to be in the moment: Meredith could sit still behind his computer, literally without any movement, for two hours in a row, and then slowly get up, with a smile and ready for a chat. He was that relaxed, also when at work! It also showed in the RAND Graduate School Band. He would tirelessly practice with us, always ready for another go at some jazz classic the score of which he himself had worked out for the band. I have fond memories of him accompanying me on the piano while playing Summer Time on the trumpet. Rest well.

Julie, when I was interviewing for my current position, Meredith's advice was not to accept the position unless I could say "yes" to 2 of 3 questions: "Would I have fun?", "Would I make money?" & "Would I learn something?" GREAT advice & perspective!

I just saw a notice about Meredith on our internal newsletter. My heart goes out to Meredith's family and friends . I did not know Meredith well but recall the great spirit and talent and open and friendly nature in the course of my duties photographing at RAND and RGS. I remember very well the speech that M.L. made to our student body at Ballard. What captivated us and what let him to his election win was, in my opinion, his unparalleled intelligence and unequaled passion. M.L. was, indeed, a force to be reckoned with, but a most benevolent force. I have not seen his since my senior year but his passing is a loss for us all. Rest well, my friend. Rest in blissful peace.

Mike Kilgore, I didn't know your brother well, when we all went to Ballard together (and your Mom and Dad and you guys were next door neighbors of sister, Sandy Hyland Carroll and her family), but I was sure sad seeing this news on Ballard site. M.L. and I went to Ballard High School together in Louisville Ky. After graduating we started to study music in college and ended up with the same professor at Bellarmine College's music department. Don Murray inspired all of us in learning piano and composition. We played in a band together for a few years called Warnig. The name came from a misspelled sign near our band house. While we had fun creating lots of modern music and discovering new ways to play older music ( M.L. brought in a Bach Brandenburg concerto re-arranged for jazz combo) the realities of the music business set in and we all went our separate ways to different ensembles in order to make a living. I remember that he once backed up Tiny Tim on a gig. I went to the Caribbean area and then to Boston and M.L. went to Hawaii. I only saw him once after that when I had moved back to Louisville and he came in town for his father's funeral. We had a nice visit and he came around to the gig that night. I have so many stories of this remarkable human being. He truly was an enigma and fun seemed to follow him around. We constantly educated ourselves and he was an inspiration to all of us! I will miss him and hope that his family can find comfort in knowing that M.L. was well loved by all of us. A true friend and compatriot. Peace and Love!

Julie I am so sorry for your loss. I never had the pleasure of meeting your husband but if he married you he was definitely a smart man. I read through the notes here and he was clearly a wonderful person as well. I wish I had met him. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Meredith was a great professor and was very nice to everybody. Will miss him.

Julie - My sincere condolences. Meredith was a kind and giving gentleman. He touched so many lives, and gave so much.

Meredith was a renaissance man, consummate researcher and just a terrific human being. "Twinkle, twinkle little star" was a fitting tribute, though Meredith was a big star - a gentle giant, with big thoughts and a huge mane of hair. He will be missed...tremendously.

What a life! I did not know about Meredith's life trajectory from the south, to Hawaii as a jazz musician, to nursing, to political science, to health care economics. I can see why I was intuitively drawn to him as a collaborator and a human being. We have lost a man with insight and love engendered by a lifetime of experience, but can celebrate having had him in our presence for the time we knew him.

I never saw a grandfather as happy as Meredith was when little Jaxon was present. That sweet child transformed him and brought him true joy. Meredith and Julie were true partners in all they did. What a loss for all of us.

Dr Kilgore inspired me as a student and I was honored to have him as the chair of my PhD committee. He was always kind and offered his help whenever I asked him. UAB and all his former students will miss him greatly.

So sorry for your loss, Julie. You and your family remain in my thoughts and prayers. Meredith's obituary is beautifully written.

Wonderful gentleman and fine teacher. He had a fine-tuned sense of humor and solid honesty. These traits combined with his Hawaiian shirts made him a delight to interact with. He will be sorely missed by his UAB friends.
