Mr. Davis was the principal at Peter G when I attended there 1962 through 1965 (grades 2-3-4-5). What I remember most was in 1963 in Mrs. Walters' third grade class, Mr. Davis suddenly came in and whispered something into Mrs. Walters' ear then he left. Just as soon as he left, Mrs. Walters announced that President Kennedy had been shot and killed that day. This was the first time Mr. Davis did NOT use the public address system to make an announcement. He felt it would be best to go to the individual rooms and inform the teachers.

We had a family of seven children and walked to Peter G. From kindergarten on. Mr. Davis was a principal when I being near the tail end of the seven, attended there. He was a very happy kind man. I was sent to his office one time, and the entire way there , I was fearful of getting paddled. He was very calm and spoke to me very matter of fact. He asked me if I thought I could go back to class and not talk the rest of the day. I nodded and he, hands folded sat behind the desk, and simply said, " ok then, you may be excused to go back". Such a sweet man. He will be missed. The picture gallery is precious. My brother is in one of them as well as my kindergarten and first grade teacher. Thank you for the memories . Rest in peace and God bless you and your family.

Merle: ...a gentleman...a friend. We'll miss playing golf...cards...and having fun in the desert. We'll miss you...but we'll remember you ...a gentleman...and our cherished friend.

I was fortunate to have Merle Davis as my 8th grade teacher in 1956-57 at the original Michael T. Simmons Grade School.
He was a wonderful teacher and mentor to all of his students. When I returned to Olympia in 1971 we reconnected and remained good friends until his death. I will always cherish his friendship and appreciate how he & the other teachers prepared me so well for life.
