I was nudged by an email to revisit Dr. Ahearn's page. I have not forgotten him. The student internship program has never been the same since he went to be with the Lord.

Dear, dear Joyce:
I do hope that you will remember me, as many times has the earth traveled around the sun since we last spoke.
I have touched the crystal bowl that you sent for my wedding many times this past year and thought of you.
Yesterday, I found a card that you sent to me in probably 1996 or so - and I have read it many times today.
So now, I have typed your name into Google, and this sad news came to the computer screen. How very much you must miss Mike. And especially here near the anniversary of his passing. Always such a tough time. I lost my brother 10 years ago in September, and when the date draws near, when the light is just so and the temperature outside just like then, I stop and relive the grief with loss. So I send this message to you today with the hope that you will receive it, and will be brightened with my remembrance.
Life has moved along with its light speed pace for me; I have a daughter now 17 years old - and no horses. Kitty cats have come, and gone. Family has come, and also gone. Yet I am still chugging along. Older, but chugging.
The love that you, Mike, Tobias and Mr. Peanuts shared with me so long ago on the farm remains ever so bright a light, ever so true, burning like the flame of an unquenchable fire. I remember your kindnesses and your joys in the days before Beltway 8 - when only breeze through trees was the sound at Blue Fox Farm.
While I am sad that Mike has gone on for his reward, and will miss him, I remain confident that he is perfected in our Lord's love. So much like the love that you and Mike shared with me all of those years ago.
Please accept my condolences for your loss. While this note comes long after the initial shock, the sentiment remains constant. And also please accept my message of love sent across the cyber space of time.
Jesus asked us to remember - and I remember. I will always remember.
Much love to you today and always,

Dr. Ahearn was a man of integrity and of few words, but when he spoke, you knew he was sincere and he meant business. He was kind and gentle, and always there for me, even when I was unaware of it. I learned so much from Dr. Ahearn and so many others during my time at MDACC, and words can't say how much I appreciated him and all who influenced my life. Dr. Ahearn will be truly missed by so many. Mrs. Ahearn, thank you for sharing him with us and my God's blessing grant you peace, comfort and strength. Please know that you are very much in my thoughts.

I thank God that I had the privilege of having worked for such a spiritual and righteous man as Dr. Ahearn. He leaves a rich legacy of learning and caring; a legacy of hard work, determination and dedication to education and students.
Rest in peace Dr. Ahearn!
Joyce, may God keep you enfolded in his loving care and give you peace!

I had the privilege to work on two projects with Dr. Ahearn early in my career. I was struck by his commitment to his duties and unfailing good grace even under stressful conditions. He was truly someone to look up to and emulate. I will never forget him. I offer my prayers for God's comfort and blessings for his family and friends.

Dr Ahearn and I were acquainted as I was one of the mentors who took on students who were attracted from around the world to participate in his summer internships. He had a gift for making everyone feel appreciated, me included. I hope his family will accept my sincere condolences and take comfort in knowing that he will be mourned by many.

One of the dearest men on the planet has passed to glory! Humble, kind, quiet, brilliant, a real gentleman. Mike was gifted in so many ways but one gift blessed me so much:
Mike, you will forever be etched in my heart as a soul mate hymn singer. Mike could sing hymns from his heart with all the gusto of 100 Lovers of Jesus. I loved sitting near to share and enjoy the enthusiasm few could match. I grieve with Joyce, our class, friends and especially my beloved Cornie who loved you so.
But I know what Mike is doing today. The awe and wonder must be so great. The singing so beautiful. "I Can Only Imagine". Until we meet again, my friend. All my love to Joyce.

There are some people in life who influence you so deeply, so profoundly that you can say without reservation they changed your life... my path would have been different and lacking a particular grace without him there before me. He and Aunt Joyce complimented and encouraged each other to greatness in all aspects.
He is precious to me.... and my mother Mary, his adoring sister.
We will see him again, fully restored... of this I am sure

Dr. Ahearn was a real gentleman. I truly loved him. He was so kind and always had a smile on his face. Joyce I know you will miss him so much as we all will and you need to know he had an impact on everyone he met.

Uncle Michael was truly the most gracious man I ever met on this earth - always treating me and everyone else with the highest respect and giving honor and compliments to others, in complete humility. I'm excited to think he no longer will sing about Jesus, but will now be singing to Jesus. What a thrill!
