Michael Bernstein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 26, 2013.
Bernstein, Michael A. (1958-2013) passed away peacefully at 54. Mike was born in Gary, IN and moved to Madison, WI at 15. He graduated from Memorial High School and got his BFA with a focus in sculpture and metallurgy from UW-Madison. Mike pursued his love of art with versatile mediums, including furniture design and sculpture. He received many accolades from his peers and won many competitions. He enjoyed hunting, spending time with family at "Far-Away Farm", and long trips on his motorcycle. He loved having conversations and sharing information on almost any subject. He was well- read with a great mind, remembering and recounting statistics and facts about science, history, collectibles and countless other subjects. His most recent project was to re-read the literature classics of his college courses. Mike's ability to spin a yarn was unequalled. Most of all he enjoyed talking about his beloved daughters, Alex and Gabi. Mike is survived by his mother, Ruth, Father Alfred (Dana lin), daughters Alexandra and Gabriella, Ex-wife Catherine (Henry) Lay, Brothers, Jeffrey (Joan), Douglas (Susan), Gregory (Robin), and Uncles Louis (Bette) and Stuart (Myrna). Michael's tender but ferocious spirit inspired all who knew him. He will remain in our hearts forever. A memorial will be held for family and friends, Thursday, May 30 from 6-9 pm at the Harriet Island pavilion in St. Paul MN. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the ACLU. Michael's artwork can be viewed at: mnartists.org/work.do?rid=306225

I just heard about Mike (on 6/21/2013) and haven't had time to come to terms with this shocking news. I would have been at his memorial and spoken about him had I known.
My very deepest and most heartfelt sympathies: Al, Ruth, Jeff, Doug, Gregg, Catherine, Alex, Gabi.
Please call me (anybody!) and tell me what happened. 760-519-9492

I'm so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I lived next door to him for awhile, and he was always very kind to me and patient with me and my dog.
sounds like his memorial was lovely.

Thank you Alex and Gabi for arranging an amazing tribute to your father. The venue was perfect! Your eulogies were touching, funny, heart-felt… perfect! The Viking funeral was the perfect conclusion! Your dad would have been so proud!!!

Jessie, thank you for so much. The Viking boat was designed perfectly on short notice, and the image of it floating downstream in flames will provide a lasting memory. Moving Michael's artwork to the deli was greatly appreciated, as it gave lots of people a chance to see it for the first time.

Jim Golden, Ian, and the rest of the Golden Deli staff, thanks for graciously closing down for our private party, for the fantastic food, and for helping to make the evening flow smoothly.

To all who spoke, thank you for digging deep into your heart and sharing your unique perspective of the world of Michael. There is no doubt that those in attendance (especially Alex and Gabi) now know Michael so much better.

And, to those of you that joined us, your presence was inspirational, giving us the strength to get through the evening. Thank you.

If you have any stories (or photos) that you'd like to share with Alex and Gabi, please don't hesitate to reach out. You can stop them if you seem them around town, add comments to the Legacy.com guest book, contact them on facebook, call them, email them, etc. I'm sure there are lots of stories to be told; funny, gross, shocking, loving, etc. Tell the stories today, a year from today, or a decade from today. The stories will be appreciated.

Shirley & I met for lunch on Wednesday and talked a lot about how much we both enjoyed Mike's phone calls and visits to the office.
We were so saddened to hear the news, and sorry for the loss of such a gifted and kind person that was taken too soon.
