Michael Caputo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 21, 2023.
Michael A. Caputo died peacefully at age 67 surrounded by his family at Sarasota Memorial Hospital on June 16, 2023 after a short struggle with cancer.

Michael was the son of Antoinette (Dolly) Caputo and the late Francis (Frank) Caputo. His spirit lives on through his wife Margaret (Peggy) Caputo; his two children Carrie Caputo (Stephen Genoff) and Timothy Caputo (Chelsea Green); and his two grandsons Alexander Genoff and Hudson Caputo. He is also survived by his sister Joanne Caputo Roth and many other beloved family members.

Mike graduated from Ferris State College in 1978 with a degree in business administration and a certificate in insurance and real estate. Throughout his 40+ year career in insurance he worked primarily with Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan. Mike's passion for life was never more present than in his interaction with people and often the reason he was late. He spent many years building extensive memories with friends and family sailing on Lake Michigan. After his retirement Mike and Peggy set out on a grand adventure down the Mississippi River. They ended their trip on the Great Loop in Sarasota Bay where they made the decision to move from Michigan to Florida in 2022. Mike was not in Florida much as he was caring for his father and grandson because family always came first to him.

Friends and family will gather on Sunday, August 13th at Portage Point Inn in Onekama, Michigan. The celebration of Michael's life will begin at 3:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Moffitt Cancer Center Foundation to support Michael A. Caputo. Donations can be made by mailing a check to Moffitt Cancer Center Foundation, MBC-FOU, 12902 Magnolia Drive, Tampa, FL 33612; online at give.moffitt.org/memorial; or by calling 1-800-456-3434 ext. 1403. Peggy, Please accept my deepest condolences for Mike's sudden passing. He has been on my mind daily since my visit with him during his March stay at Moffitt Cancer Center. Although he was dealing with an overwhelming amount of uncertainty on that day, as was his nature he was interested in learning what was going on in my life. I am so very thankful that I had that opportunity to see and speak with him in person after many years of infrequent telephone exchanges.

Mike and I shared the same birth year and month (August 1955). Mike would frequently call me on my birthday (the 19th) to acknowledge the day and to remind me that he was fifteen days older. I will miss those calls and will most certainly remember him fondly on future August 4th's (Mike's day).

Peggy and Family... please know that MaryBeth and I are holding you all close in our thoughts and prayers...

Peggy... our memories go back to Ferris days when we met you and Mike... after graduation we lost touch... fast forward a few years and I was working at my desk at Allstate in Livonia and I heard that very special "laugh" that we all know so well. I turned around and there stands Mike... it was Mike´s first day in our office. Mike and I had lunch that day in the cafeteria... catching up and when I asked him where you two were living... gracious... he told us you two had moved in to an apartment off 275 and Michigan Ave in Canton! The very same complex that we were living in.

Through the years as both Mike and I moved on from our first jobs in the world of insurance... I ran in to Mike in downtown Haslett at a gas station many years later. I asked Mike what he was doing there and he said he was now working for Farm Bureau and that you and the kids lived in Haslett. Good grief... that´s where MaryBeth and I were living!

Through the many years Mike and I would connect at the Detroit Blue Goose Christmas parties, we would text or talk on the phone periodically... he would catch me up on you, the kids and later those precious grandsons. I always enjoyed hearing about your family trips on the sailboat.

Even after you two moved to Manistee... I´d see Mike at an occasional "lunch" in Okemos with Ron Janowski, Troy Winslow and some Farm Bureau Alumni.

Needless to say our brotherhood was strong after 46 years... and while we didn´t hang out a lot... every time we connected we just seemed to pick up where we left off in our last meeting.

Mike´s love for you, Carrie, Tim, their spouses, and later the grandchildren (and most recently Dixie) was always the first thing I heard from Mike... you were all the center of all things "Mike"! Mike was a very special person... we were all blessed to have him in our lives...

God Bless all of you and give you Peace... love you all! Steve & MaryBeth

I worked and spent time with Mike quite a bit back in the 90's. In a field that was often characterized by ups and downs, I remember him as a bright spirit and calming influence, come what may. And it came as no surprise he was a family man, known to readily share personal and family experiences with joy and optimism. I am much saddened to hear of his untimely passing and will keep his grieving family and friends in my good prayers always.

Dearest Peggy and Family, You were all there when I lost my husband. I wish I were there to be with you as you go through this journey of Mike´s life. I always remember Mike as smiling and laughing. Such a wonderful way to remember someone! Please know that you and the kids (do I dare call them that!?) are in my thoughts and prayers as you continue this difficult time.
Love and prayers,

I didn't get to spend as much time with Mike as I did with you Peggy but when I did it was so obvious how much he loved taking care of his family. You were all lucky to have such a fun loving and steadfast Dad. I can still see that wide grin and hear that big shoulder-shaking laugh. I am sure he will be watching over you all from above, that is if he can get away from chatting with the angels.

When we moved to Manistee back in 2014 you and Peggy took us under your wings and made us a part of your family...we felt so welcomed and knew we had friends for life. So may good times and great memories of time spent with you, Peggy, Tim/Chelsea, Carrie/Steve and all of your family. Your contagious smile, corny jokes, deep laughter, fabulous stories and deep conversations will be greatly missed but never forgotten...RIP Big Mike, we love you and are sending heavenly hugs your way.

Peggy you and the family have my heartfelt sympathy. Mike was such an amazing person and so full of life. He loved to talk and loved to talk about his family and his boat the most. I'm sure he will be sorely missed by many and the world is a little darker without his light. I pray the Lord wraps you and yours in his loving arms and comforts you through this time of loss.

River buddies forever. So many sailing times shared, mishaps avoided and landlubber rescue of a stranded captain, dock tails and kindness spiced with a generosity of spirit unmatched. Fred and I are so very sorry Peggy and family.

I am so sorry Peggy, Carrie, Tim and family. Mike visited with us when he came up to be with his dad. Sat on the pier at PPI with Bill Hayes and visited until dark. Always so jovial, full of life. We understand sarcomas and how quickly they affect a loved one... and their quality of life. Love to you all. He will always be in my heart Deb & George
