In our lifetimes as students, we may be fortunate to come across a handful of teachers that make a truly indelible mark on those they interact with. In my "handful", Mike Chatland was one of those few teachers. Always respectful, while having an amazing sense of humour, the kids at Brookfield quickly learned that he was a man/teacher/coach to be respected and one to be paid attention. I saw with my own eyes how students reacted with and around "Chats", and it was a unique thing to witness and be a part of. Truly, he is one who made a difference.

Five years ago, I had the privilege of meeting Michael Chatland and his wife Maureen. They welcomed me into their home and their hearts and shared their deepest and most personal thoughts and feelings. I was producer of ‘Patient-Stories’ for the Ottawa Heart Institute Telethon. Michael had been suggested to me as a wonderful ‘story’. That’s because he was a wonderful man. Actually his story was suggested to me by a former student and big fan of Michael’s, who now works in the pacemaker clinic at the Heart Institute, or did then, Linda Dolman.
My cameraman and I spent hours, no – days, with Michael and Maureen. We made sandwiches in the kitchen and laughed until there were tears, as this lovely couple tried desperately to heed our words “Just pretend we’re not here!!” We spent a long, difficult day together at the Heart Institute. Maureen waited patiently while we followed Michael through diagnostic test after test, and finally for assessment by the unforgettable and esteemed cardiologist, Dr. Lyall Higginson.
I’ve just looked back at the final script for that story. Two words I see in Michael’s dialogue, over and over and over. ‘Thank you”. It might have been to a doctor or a diagnostic technician or a clerk at a desk, or a cleaner in the hall. “Thank you”.
Michael didn’t feel sorry for himself. He felt blest. Michael was grateful, most especially for his family. But also for his years as teacher and coach at Brookfield High School, his former students, and for the excellent care he received at the Heart Institute. And when acknowledging his heart problems and the limitations they posed, he was optimistic and pro-active and always, always answered my very personal questions with honesty and humour.
I had warned Michael that should he agree to do this story with me, I would be intrusive. I would ask very direct questions. There was no other way for me to present a truly honest portrait of a person who was receiving care at the Heart Institute. We would talk about life and we would talk about death - all with a camera rolling. I gave Michael every reason and every opportunity to walk away from my proposal. I’m sure that I told him that if I were given the same opportunity, I would probably say no. But Michael and Maureen said yes. Michael wanted to ‘give back’. And give, he did … they both did.
During the telethon that year, the phones stopped ringing when Michael’s story was on TV. That was a good thing. Viewers were engaged with this man. And when the story was over, the phones rang again in earnest. That was an even better thing. Michael’s story, with Maureen’s help, generated thousands upon thousands of dollars for the Heart Institute to help others through advanced research, diagnostics, education and treatment.
But Michael did much more than to generate funds for the Heart Institute. He raised awareness of heart disease. He gave hope to others who might be facing similar prognoses. He showed us all how to live our lives fully and with joy even when faced with a disability, with a huge smile on our faces and to laugh when there wasn’t always news to laugh about. Michael convinced me that he was the luckiest man on the planet. He loved his family so very dearly. And he was grateful for his many years of teaching, even though he had to stop teaching because of his health problems.
Here is what I have found in a filed script from that story, five years ago:
AFTER MY FAMILY I AM MOST PROUD OF MY 33 YEARS OF TEACHING - TEACHING/COACHING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL AND I THINK IN MY HEART I HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE TO A FAIR NUMBER OF CHILDREN – I STILL LOVE THE KIDS THAT I TAUGHT.
And it is obvious from the comments I’ve read, that those kids still love Michael and will never, ever forget him. I wish that he’d taught my kids. I wish that he’d taught me! But actually, he did.
Thank you, Michael - for touching my heart in our relatively brief but profound encounter in this life. And for your great generosity of spirit that lead you to say on that day after I’d talked your ear off on the phone and given you every reason to say ‘NO’, you said: “OK Tricia – come by on Tuesday. If this can help even one person out there … I’m in … and I’ll talk to Maureen!!!!!”
To Michael’s family, please accept my sincere condolences. I am only now learning of Michael’s passing. I would have been there to express these thoughts in person. To Maureen, thank you for all of your patience and for opening up your heart and your home to a stranger. To Michael’s children and grandchildren, I hope that the DVD recording of Michael’s story will give not only comfort, but also evidence to future generations that Michael Chatland was one extraordinary man who made a difference.

As a boy Chats was my hockey coach and he taught me how to lose with dignity and win with grace. As a teenager he was my football coach and he showed me the importance of team. When I could no longer play he convinced me to help coach and instilled a love of teaching that has never left me. I will forever be in is debt.

The world is a less friendly place without Mr.Chatland. He was one of the classiest men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. His encouragement and support made such a difference in the lives of so many of his former students, including myself. I adored him and am so sad to hear of his passing. I hope your family finds some comfort in knowing what a difference your husband/father/ grandfather made for so many people.
God bless.

I had the privelege of playing Junior football under Mike Chatland at Brookfield during the mid 70s. I can still remember encountering Chats in the hallway on the day after one of our games. He literally danced toward me singing about how I caught my fisrt pass. He then proceeded to praise me for the way I caught the ball, continued moving my feet, and turned immediately upfield as I had been taught to do. For a young athlete these words were sweet music to my ears. I have never forgotten that encounter with Chats. He was an outstanding teacher but an even more amazing human being.

My sister told me today that Chats had died. I couldn't believe it, because in my mind he is Brookfield High School. How can he be gone and the building still stand? We spoke at length at how important he was to us... 23 years later. What a wonderful thing to have known him.
sincerely,

Like many other people who have commented here I too had Mr. Chatland in my thoughts recently...I think I will chalk it up to a falling spark from the bursting firework that was his beautiful spirit as he entered heaven last week.
Pat and I are sure that Johnny O and Chats have already raised a pint together at the Prescott in the sky!
We have talked and laughed about many sweet, touching and sometimes "sideline" stories over the past week as we recall our days spent at Brookfield:
I will never forget the lengthy and "misty" standing ovation he got upon his return to the school gym after his heart surgery.
Then there was the time he saved Karen M, Lesley W, and myself a lot of heartache when he agreed to be our "date" to the '88 Grad...really who better to bring?
Our oldest son is starting Jr.High next fall. We hope that he is lucky enough to have someone who comes close to meeting the standards set by Chats. As a teacher, mentor, coach and later in life as a friend!
Lovingly,
Pat and Tara

There are only a few teachers in life that I still remember fondly. Mr. Chatland was one of them.
He was really a great guy (though he did have a nasty streak when playing ball hockey at lunchtime).

Anyone who knew Mr. Chatland will recall his warm and frequent smile. He was well loved and respected by his students, including both my husband and I. I still laugh at the memory of the lunchtime square dancing at Brookfield in the 70's. When 'Chats' swung his partner, both my feet would be off the floor - what fun we had! I also remember the proud father showing me the photo of his baby daughter and trying to convince this budding artist to try my hand at a portrait. He will be remembered with the fondest of memories. Our condolences to his family.

This has been the greatest gift. I am blessed to have had him touch my life. It's funny, I thought of him, out of the blue, early last week...and that made me smile...I am truly blessed to call him FRIEND.I'm sure that every heart that Chats has touched, smiles when they think of him. With love, Suki

Mr. Chatland loved our music, or at least he made like he did. I had a few bands at Brookfield High School and i'd bring in these lousy recordings of our last jam session and he would act like it was great, what a guy.
I was just thinking about him the other day, almost 30 years since i left school, i think that says something.

Such a kind, gentle man. He was a role model of the highest order. He showed us how to live life well: with a smile for everyone he passed, a laugh during every lesson, and a higher emotional intelligence than you could ever ask for in a mentor. I'm a better teacher and person for having known him.
Thanks, Chats.

Dear Maureen and family.
When I was 16 years old, my father died. We never spoke of his illness, it was not the family way. No one knew of our private pain, until the day came that my dad died, then no one could deny it. I walked slowly to the high school, really not knowing what to say. I ended up in "Arches" room, it was the closest to the back entry.
I reported I could not run the track and field meet. But why? Well my dad died, and that day was his funeral.
There was so much pain.
The day of the "visitation", I chose a brown skirt, a cream blouse, and some brown platform shoes, it was May 1976. All of it was hard, but there that Chats and Arch and some close friends. I cold not believe it. To have the more organized life of school intersect with the big bang of the home front. It never left my heart.
My salut to this man. God Bless.

Our mutual friend Bill Phillips emailed me from South Carolina to break the news of Mike's passing to the ages.
Mike was a special high school friend, classmate and teamate at Quinte Secondary in Belleville during the early 60's.As a football player he could run like the wind(almost as fast as our coach Jack Sisson) and was a star player and stalwart for the Quinte Saints.
I'll always remember him as unusually sensitive, thoughtful and kind which truly set set him apart. His sunny smile , disposition and infectious laugh were unique.
My deep respect and sincere condolences to his family from the other Bill Phillips,Vancouver,B.C.

Dear Maureen...
My heart is so FILLED with thoughts of you, ever since Joy Kingsbury called me here in Rochester,NY to tell me that your sweet Michael had passed on.
Joy knows how fondly I remember my colleagues from Brookfield HS; but I had recently asked her specifically about Chats as I had heard he was not well. In fact, I planned to drive up to Ottawa in April to join the Retirees' Breakfast, one of my goals being to see Michael. I am SO sorry I missed that opportunity. I will, however, leave today to go pay my respects to one of the most kind and funny and inspiring people I've ever met.
Your dear guy helped me survive my first year of teaching in 1970, especially when I found out I had to coach the Jr Girls' Basketball Team... and I knew nothing about basketball! My major subject was English. HELP!!!
Well, between 'Mikey' and Craig Miln, I learned enough to get those girls competition ready. But more importantly, the humour Michael served up daily prevented me from losing the joy one needs to know in order to teach. He was a gem. Will always be a gem...
I'm packing now and will hope to see you tonight at calling hours, or certainly at the chapel on Monday. You were ALWAYS his beautiful bride, and I can't wait to see you... and meet your family. Wow.... I have SO MANY memories to comfort me and make me laugh during my drive. But I will be sad too...
A HUGE HUG for you, sweet 'Mo'...
as I wish you great comfort during this difficult parting...
I'll see you soon,
Lee Vester

Maureen, Jason, Deborah & Chris:
Losing someone as strong and gentle as Michael will leave a void in all our lives.
Michael was the kind of athlete I wish I could have been. As a person he was someone you would be proud to have on your team.
When I heard the news I was still shocked despite the warnings we have known. I am proud to have known Michael for over 50 years and the fun we had and the memories we made will sustain me.
Susan joins me in expressing our sorrow. Michael was a real gentleman. He will be truly missed.

Maureen & Family~
My heart holds a space for you and your family at this challenging time. Chats influence on my life was monumental. I remember in grade 12 thinking who do I want to be like when I grow up? Hence i became a Phy. Ed. teacher and teach at an outdoor education school, with Chats as my life long mentor.
Through 5 years of BHS track, Chats inspired me to continue to dream big. I turned to Chats many life lessons and envisioned him in the shadow of many mountains as I climbed when times were lonely and challenging. Thoughts of Chats smile could warm one heart no matter how cold it was.
Chats... you will continue to live in all of us who were blessed to have you touch our lives.
all my love,
Peggy

It is with a sad heart that I write this but I have a silly smile on my face as I recall the legend of 'Sylvia". In 1972, the senior girls' basketball team was having a terrific season (we eventually won the city championship) but our coach felt that we were distracted by the boys who would hang around during our practices and so she banned all males from the gym. During a morning practice, Mike, wearing a pink negligee and a blond wig, joined the layup line without our noticing right away. When we did see him, we cracked up! We named him 'Sylvia' and he became one of the girls.
I will always remember his smile. Please accept my most heartfelt condolences on Mike's passing.

My condolences go out to Debbie, Chris, Jason, and the rest of the Chatland family. "Chats" was a great teacher, coach, mentor, but best of all - a friend... He helped me (and many others) through some tough times in HS. I can still picture his infectious smile, or the knack he had for cheering people up when they were down. Anyone who knew him became a better person for it. Although I've only run into him a few times since HS, he still remembered me as though it had been yesterday. Each time, after we shook hands, said our goodbyes, I was always amazed at how I felt afterwards. The man simply brought out the best in all of us. I can say that I'm proud to have known him, proud that I played football for him, and know that he'll always be in my heart... BHS '90-93'

Mr. Chatland was a one of kind teacher/coach that you always remembered fondly of when you reminisce about your high school days. As a high school student at Brookfield, Mr. Chatland (Chats) was a wonderful, positive, and generous man. I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Mr. Chatland when he visited the Heart Institute, as I work there, and I remember one Saturday, during a lengthy stay here, I had a wonderful talk and reminisce with a man who was positive, funny, and inspirational just as he was as one of the best high school teachers ever. We will be hard pressed to come across somebody who has had a greater positive influence on so many people during a lifetime than Mr. Chatland. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Although we have lost somebody incredibly special, his memory will undoubtedly shape our lives to come. Mr. Chatland was always a great supporter of the Zakutney clan and we will always be thankful.
