Michael Dunbar Obituary

Leo Dunbar

Michael Leo Dunbar, a longtime resident of Alamo, CA, passed away peacefully on 22 June 2024, in Walnut Creek, CA, at the age of 62. Born in Oakland, CA on 30 October 1961. Mike was the beloved son of the late Judge William Dunbar and Joan Dunbar.

Mike attended St. Pascal's Elementary School and Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland. He furthered his education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he developed a lifelong passion for learning.

An avid sports enthusiast, Mike particularly enjoyed baseball and golf. He spent many happy hours with family and friends, taking family trips to Carmel for lunch at Pebble Beach and Spanish Bay, walking the Iron Horse Trail, and attending baseball games with his brother-in-law. Mike also loved playing board games and doing puzzles for countless hours with his daughter. He took great pleasure in attending his daughter Sabrina's soccer and lacrosse events.

Mike is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 27 years, Francesca Venezia Dunbar, who cared for him throughout his 24-year battle with glioblastoma. He is also survived by their cherished daughter, Sabrina V. Dunbar, his children from a previous relationship, James and Christina Dunbar, and his two brothers Peter and John. The family resided in Alamo for the past 26 years.

In the later stages of his illness, Mike was tragically robbed of his brilliant mind and once vibrant personality. Brain disease is a difficult journey for an entire family, and Mike was fortunate to have unwavering love and support from his mother-in-law, Anita Venezia; brother-in-law, Sean Venezia; and sisters-in-law, Kappy Venezia and Antonia Venezia.

Mike valued his family and faith, having been raised in the Catholic faith. He attended St. Isidore Church in Danville, where he found comfort and community.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in Mike's name to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) or the Alzheimer's Association. These organizations were close to Mike's heart, and your contributions will help continue their vital work.

Dear Francesca and Sabrina,
We are so tremendously sorry to hear of your loss. We just learned today that Mike had passed away in June. Please accept our deepest condolences. We always enjoyed seeing him and chatting when he was out for his walk and we for ours.
And Sabrina, we still remember the wonderful cookies and the drawing you brought us way back when!

With Warmth,
Betsy and Art

Mike was an active member of the UCSF Survivors/Thrivers support group and I met him when I joined, he was my peer match. From that close knit group, we were able to chat weekly. I appreciated his even-keeled wisdom, but not as much as sneaking him out of the house and assisted living for coffee and mints. He will be sorely missed as a member of the group, and my Bay Area shenanigans.

I have may wonderful memories traveling for business with Michael. The most memorable was our visit the US Ambassador's house in London. We were exhibiting at DSEI, and we received the invite to a cocktail reception. Michael's quick wit and dry humor makes me smile to this day. He could alleviate any bad situation with a sarcastic comment or observation that would make things better, at least temporary. I will miss Michael; he was a delightful person.
