Michael Galen Obituary

Published by Santa Cruz Sentinel on Aug. 24, 2021.
Michael Galen
Jan. 14, 1948 - Aug. 22, 2021
Cape Elizabeth, Maine
Michael Galen died peacefully at home August 22, 2021 after a long battle with heart failure. He was 73.
Michael was born January 14, 1948 in Toledo, Ohio to Ollie and Evelyn Galen. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Irene Tower, and his stepsisters, Carol Fena, Joan Koenig, Janet Robinson, and Jean Durosko. After living in Santa Cruz for 27 years, Michael and Irene moved to Maine in 2003 to be closer to their families.
Michael will be remembered for his unfailing kindness, his sense of humor and infectious love of life and fun. He loved sharing good times and good food with family and friends. He enjoyed bowling with his friends in both California and Maine for many years as a league bowler with mad skills and several perfect games to his credit. Michael's faith was also very important to him and he never missed Mass, attending online throughout the pandemic.
Those closest to him in recent years will remember his determination, grace and inspiring example in facing life's challenges with humor and a smile. He cherished every day, thanking God he was "still vertical." He realized his dream of owning his second Corvette ("Thunder") and took it out for a joy ride nearly every day right up to the end.
Everyone who remembers Michael is asked to celebrate his life in their own way, perhaps most appropriately by raising a glass in his memory. He will be buried in Toledo, Ohio with his parents. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

I was every sad to hear of Michaels death. I was his cousin, related by our parents. Michael's dad was my mother's, Alice's brother. I have not seen Michael for a very long time. He was in my wedding back in 1960. When I last saw him he was young but I am sure he became the wonderful man his obituary describes. I wish we had known each other as adults. May God hold you in the palm of his hand at this very difficult time.

I am sadden to learn of Michael's death. It has been a very long-time since our families have had any contact. My mother was Ollie's, Michael's father, youngest sister, Alice. I remember him as being a kind person when we were kids. I am truly sorry to hear of your loss and hope that your memories help you through this time.

He memorial mass was at my Parish. I missed the announcement of it at church because one of my granddaughter's wedding was in another church and did not make mass this last Sunday at my church h or otherwise I would have been at church for mass! So sorry!

Irene, please accept my sincere condolences in your heartbreaking loss. I knew Michael through his mother Evelyn when I worked at The Woods at Canco. He was so great to her and I know how much he loved his family. May your many years of happy memories help you through this difficult time.

My condolences to Irene and the rest of Michael's family. I knew him well in Santa Cruz and can still remember his laugh. His boss at one time had killer second row seats to Warrior games and Michael took me a couple of times to "fatdog" it. A great guy. RIP Michael.
