Michael "Mike" Bernard Gates passed away at age 68 on August 19, 2018 in Camarillo, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theresa Sinclair Gates and Bernard F. Gates, stepmother, Barbara Flores Gates; brother, Tony Gates, nephew Cale Harveston and brother-in-law Willy Peters. He leaves behind sons, Jake Jones, Matt Jones, Sam Jones (Tatiana), Josh Gates (Stacey), and Kade Gates (Kellyn); daughter, Aarin Gates; brothers, Dan(Simone), Dean, Buck Colby( Kelly), Ron(Tiffany), and Brad(Christine); and sisters, Rebecca, Ivy Peters, Holly Barkley, Julie Kapphahn (Larry), and Mindy Fleming (Chris); aunts Grayce Parli (Jim) and Polli Butzner(Don), uncle Gene Gates(Yvonne) as well as many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mike Loved Life.

Mike was born April 14, 1950 in San Diego, California. He spent his early years in Lemon Grove, CA where he began his livelong love for playing baseball. The family moved to Ventura County in 1963 where Mike settled and made his life. The oldest of 12 children, Mike was quietly protective of his brothers and sisters. He was ready with a hug and a smile for his sisters and a punch on the arm for his brothers. He attended Hueneme H.S. and graduated Camarillo H.S. 1968.

He followed in his father's and grandfather's footsteps as a talented and hard working carpenter. He later worked as expert builder, conducting classes and advising DIYers at Home Depot, Oxnard. He went on to installing windows.

Mike married Linda Burnsed and they had three sons. Later, he married Cindy Hernandez and they had two sons and a daughter.

Michael had a passion for sports, particularly the San Francisco Giants. An avid softball player, he was a versatile athlete whatever position he filled. He was admired by teammates and opponents for his skill and sportsmanship. He was also a generous coach and mentor to young players, including daughter Aarin's high school softball team.

Cars, especially hotrods were also his lifelong passion. Mike kept his 1930 Coupe for 50 years and it was a well-known and welcome sight?except to those who were less enamored of its loud pipes. He had fun traveling far and wide to numerous car shows and events. Everyone enjoyed his humor and easy-going nature.

Mike, known to most as "Gator", was a legend: super-loved, great guy, friend to all, always supportive uncle, an awesome father and Grandpa. He adored his 5 grandkids; Finn, Samaiya, Dash, Daxton and Zoey.

That love was reciprocated, as shown through son Kade's statement:

"I love you Dad! You were everything good in me. You were a great father, the greatest! You were my children's grandfather and they adored you! You taught me how to be a father, you taught me everything by being a positive example and showing everyone love. I hope to be more like you as I try to figure out this life. Rest easy, Dad."

In lieu of flowers, the family requests support for a memorial fund to Josh Gates 1927 E. Main St, Ventura, CA. 93001. A memorial will be held at a later date.

Mike Gates was such a positive, loving man, who loved his kids more than anything. He was strong and kind and always tried to help others. Mike, may you be surrounded by love in eternity, as you surrounded others with your love here on earth. We're gonna miss you.

My condolences to the Family, kids, grandkids, everyone. Mike never met a stranger. I will always remember his enthusiasm and his laugh. We played ball together many times, mostly with The Grubbers 88-92. Yes, he played wherever needed. Hearing his car roaring into the ballpark, 5 minutes before gametime. Or his hitting style-one down the right field line/foul, one down the left field line/foul, then a base hit up the middle! Coaching our kids, watching them grow up, always good to see Gator.
If there is a VC slow pitch hall of fame, he should be in it. My Dad got a real kick out of Mike, and enjoyed ribbing him, often. You will not be forgotten, Goodbye old friend,

My deepest condolences to the family. I played softball with Gator for years in Camarillo on "Rubens Renegades", the Oxnard Merchants. He was a great ball player and an inspiration. I remember his beard he had for years. One game he showed up all shaved. Hardly recognized him. I remember his old hot rod; it was a beaut!!

May God provide comfort and healing at this time.

I was Josh's baseball coach in Somis many years ago. I remember Mike quite well. The site of Mike's hot rod zipping past the baseball field is a great memory. He was a very supportive baseball dad, and I appreciated all his support. I am sorry to hear the news. Condolences to Josh and the entire Gates family. Ed Sandell, Somis, Ca
