Michael Hegstrand Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 21 to Oct. 26, 2003.
Hegstrand Michael J. Hegstrand, age 45, died peacefully October 19 at his residence in Tampa Bay. With a larger than life persona matched only by his kind and compassionate heart, Mike will be forever remembered for his wit, friendship, laugh and countless acts of charity. He will be dearly missed by his friends and fans around the world. He is survived by his wife, Dale; mother-in-law, Marcia Harris; sister, Sue (Joe) Auyer; brothers, Tom (Mary), Rich, Scott (Laurie Stone), Dan (Krissy); many nieces, nephews and cousins; and long time wrestling partner and friend, Joe Laurinaitis. Preceded in death by parents, Marge and Art Hegstrand; and sister-in-law, Patty Hegstrand. Mike grew up in North Minneapolis and was a graduate of Patrick Henry High where he established many life long friendships among his fellow 'Northsiders'. He began his legendary pro-wrestling career in 1983 as "Road Warrior Hawk" and, together with his partner "Animal" (Joe Laurinaitis), ruled the tag team wrestling world for the next 20 years. Mike and Joe were recently voted the "Greatest Tag Team of All Time". In 1998 Mike married Dale, the love of his life, and settled in the Tampa Bay area. Their mutual love and respect for each other was evident in everything they did. In 2002, Mike welcomed God back into his life and dedicated his energies to counseling youths across the country. Mike, you have touched countless lives in your short time here. We can think of no better words to describe your extraordinary life than those you would often use in the ring: "WHAT A RUSH!" Memorial services celebrating Mike's life will be held in Florida and the Twin Cities as follows: Tuesday, October 28, 2:00 PM at Seminole United Methodist Church, Seminole, Florida; Thursday October 30, 3:00 PM at St.John the Baptist Church, 835 2nd Ave NW; New Brighton, MN; 651-633-8333. Visitation two hours prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers all prayers, thoughts and memorials to: Michael Hegstrand Memorial Fund; PO Box 432; Indian Rocks Beach, FL 33785.

Well it's been around a year since the unfortunate loss of Michael. Not a day goes by that I don't think of him and Joe being in the ring and giving it all they had and then some. I loved The Road Warriors, which means I also loved Mike. He seemed to be a hell of a great guy, and my only regret is that I never had a chance to meet him or Joe. Mike will live in our hearts and memories for the rest of our lives. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, and I do hope you find the strength to get through this rough time. They say time heals all wounds, but some wounds are much worse than others. I'm sure Mike is in a better place, and that he'll be waiting for family and friends. Farewell, Mike. May we meet someday on the other side.

I'm 36 years old and have been following the road warriors from the minute they entered the wrestling world, here in quebec we take our wrestling seriously and are very loyal to our home grown talent but when the warriors rolled in to town all bets where off, they where so mush bigger and there wrestling moves looked so mush moore powerfull and devestating then anything previously seen.Hawk will be missed but never forgotten. Thanks for the memory's

"Wow....what a rush."

I won't be selfish like some with this... this is to the people that deserve it the most...

I would like to send my deepest condolences to the Hegstrand family. You have suffered a tremendous, and unexpexted loss in your life, and I wish nothing but the best for you in the days ahead. "Hawk" will truly be missed by his fans world wide, but that doesn't compare to a family member leaving before one's time.

My sympathies also go out to his long time tagteam partner and "brother" Joe (Animal), as I know you were close also, and this is something difficult for you too.

As a saying goes; "what doesn't kill us, only makes us stronger", I hope you all find that strength, and remember the best!!

God Bless to the family of Michael (forever) "Hawk" Hegstrand!

I will miss Mike Hegstrand very much I first met him at age 19 I am 36 now and very saddened by his passing. I am glad however that he did go in his sleep so he was at peace I pray he did not suffer. He was a great guy and friend to everyone he met. As a former wrestler myself he was great to me and always there to listen to what I had to say. I will miss him and I give my sympathy to his family its such a loss I know he was great. Oh what a rush was to meet him, with his overwhelming personality. I love you and miss you Mike Hegstrand you were like a big brother to me. I wish his family peace also and to know we all loved him too. God Bless.

October 29, 2003

I've been a wrestling fan since I was 4 years old, I'm now 29. The Road Warriors were larger than life to a young girl who did nothing but dream of wrestling. On my travels through the years I've met many superstars but sadly I never got to meet one of my childhood idols, Michael Hegstrand. Gladly I have had the pleasure of seeing him perform many times.

Mike will always be remembered as a true innovator in this sport. He was a consummate professional with very deep religious beliefs and he was helping others in his final years to find God as well.

Mike is truly with the angels now and his family, friends, and long-time fans are left with just memories and tears. He is gone but will never be forgotten.

I guess God needed a champion.

I am still in total shock that Michael (Hawk) is gone.

I know that Michael asked God into his heart some time ago and that I will get to see Road Warrior Hawk in the Heavenly Wrestling Alliance when I come to Heaven myself. I look forward to the day I get to hear "Ohhhh, what a rush!" again.

Until then, may Michael Rest In Peace.

My deepest condolences go the Hegstrand family on the passing of Mechael. Him and John were,as the Road Warriors, were, and always will be,the all time tag-team of my wrestling viewing life. I had the honor of seeing them perform many times. They were the epitome of class. God Bless. Steven

October 29, 2003

I had the privilege and honor of meeting Hawk and Animal on a flight out of Chicago back in the early 90's. Being a fan since the beginning of the Road Warriors, I of course was awestruck to see them in person. I chatted for a bit, got their autographs, and just marveled at these 2 larger than life individuals.

To see a side of both Hawk and Animal that isn't seen on tv, in the wrestling ring was truly a great honor, and to see the Road Warriors not go out the way they should in the ring is sad, but it is even sadder for a truly good guy like Hawk to go before he should in real life. Godspeed Hawk, you will be missed!!!

It's sad that those of us who are here on Earth have to say goodbye to Mike, but we can take comfort in the fact that Mike knew God and is in heaven as I write this. Mike will live on forever and I for one will finally get to meet this man in person one day when heaven becomes my home. The Road Warriors were the most awesome tag team of all time. Mike was truly an entertainer and of all the wrestlers to pass away in the last couple of years, I think that he will be missed the most. See you soon Mike.

I am saddened to hear of Mr. Hegstrands passing. I grew up watching the WWF and watching the Road Warriors. Hawk was my favorite out of the two and I can not begin to count the number of days I went to bed with a sore throat from practiceing my Hawk impressions. I am just happy they had one last match with the WWE and it was fitting that it was for the tag titles as they the Road Warriors will go down as the best tag team ever. Good bye Hawk and your right it was a rush.

I remember when me and my younger brother would play wrestling with other kids we would always pick to be "Animal and Hawk-The LOD". My brother would do the

"OOOOOOH WHAT A RUSH!" and the other kid's knew we meant business. Then our Father took us to see a WWF house show, and we must have gone bananas when the LOD came out. I still have a picture of Hawk coming of the turnbuckle with the Doomsday Device. I cherish that and every moment I watched Mike, Joe and Even Paul. Hawk was one of the best, if not the best in wrestling. You will be missed Hawk. I know I will never forget the memories you have left us all.

I have been a wrestling fan for years now. The passing of Hawk is totally shocking! you will be missed!

One story I can remember about him was a couple of years ago when they had a short run with ECW in Philadelphia...My friends and I were there--we were in the 1st row and one of my friends got hurt by a wrestler..Hawk saw this and came over, picked her up, and kissed her and asked her if she was ok. That friend who got hurt passed away in May of this year at the age of 18. Hawk is up in heaven with you Nicole! I love you both!

R.I.P

Thank you!

I remember seeing the Road Warriors when they first appeared on television. I thought, "these guys are awesome!" Through the years, I've always had that same thought when they wrestled.

"What a rush" it's been to follow your career.

Rest in peace, and thank you for always putting on a good show.

I have always been a Road Warrior Fan for many years. And followed everything they have ever done in and out of the world of pro wrestling or sports entertainment. Hawk and Animal are the ones that set the standard for tag teams. Hawk will be missed, but he is in good company up there with Legends looking down on all of us saying Ohhhh What AHH RUSHHHHHHHHH.

Rest In Peace

I began to watch U.S. pro wrestling in 1985, and remember being in awe of the Road Warriors. This feeling of watching people very gifted and special was rekindled when they reappeared in WWE this year. My thoughts and prayers go out to Hawk's family and friends.

I was never fortunate enough to meet the Road Warriors, but they were, and still are, my favorite tag team. I have many tapes of their matches, and I still get excited watching them. Thank you Mike and Joe, for your hard work, dedication, and talent. Watching you made me want to be like you. The greatest form of flattery is imitation, and I can't tell you how many times I was Road Warrior Hawk as a kid. God bless you and yours. I will miss you.
