Michael D. Hewitt, age 61, of Marshall, died at Lifespan Hospice Residence on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008. Mike was born on December 5, 1946 in Petoskey. He was the son of Virgil and Margaret (Hammontree) Hewitt. Mike lived the majority of his life in Homer, moving to Marshall in 2004. He was a 1965 graduate of Homer High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and served in Thailand. He started his career with the Michigan Air National Guard in the early 1970’s. Later he left the Air Guard for three years to serve in the Army National Guard. Mike returned to the Air Guard, where he served at their base in Battle Creek until his retirement as a Master Sergeant with the Civil Engineers in December of 2006. Mike was married in August of 1987 to Kathleen S. Anderson Wirebaugh in Loveland, CO. He was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Mike enjoyed golfing and hunting in his spare time. Mike was a “true blue” avid University of Michigan fan! He is survived by his wife, Kathy; his daughters Kim (Charles ) Ruge and Teri (Roger) Rathbun all of Coldwater; his grandson, Cameron Brock Ruge; 2 step-sons, Todd Wirebaugh of Fremont, IN and Derrick (Marcy) Wirebaugh of Homer; 6 step-grandchildren; his mother Margaret Hewitt-Caroline of Boyne City; his brothers, Roger Hewitt of Boyne City and Jimmy (Kathy) Hewitt of Florida; his sister, Gail (Dan) Reeve of Hanover, and a half-brother John Fleming of Gaylord; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Virgil Hewitt and a brother Danny as a baby. A memorial service will be held at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home on Monday Jan. 7, at 11AM, with Chaplain James Codde officiating. Interment will follow in Ft. Custer National Cemetery with full military honors. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Lifespan Hospice Residence. Assistance with memorials available at Kempf Funeral Home.
