Many times would hear Michael preach at the Notre Dame Sacred Heart Basilica, then go to a student dorm Mass that night to hear the sermon again. His words were magnetic. We played racket ball at Moreau Seminary - Notre Dame. What joy, fun and wisdom Michael brought to my life.

It is difficult to convey in words all that Michael has meant and continues to mean to me as a teacher, mentor, and friend these past 16 years - from his talk at undergraduate orientation in July 2006 to my time as his student, teaching assistant, friend (and even roommate for a few weeks in Fall 2019). Through his classes and talks on campus, Michael gently but powerfully shaped what it meant for my friends and me to be part of Boston College and contributed greatly to the sense of magic that permeated our undergraduate experience. He modeled excellently the vocation of the theologian and continues to shape so much of my own teaching of Christian theology and ethics today in trying to convey to students the beauty, depth, and richness of the Christian tradition and the possibility and shape of living as intelligent, responsible Christian believers. Grateful for the tremendous gift of our friendship, I offer on behalf of my family my deepest, most heartfelt condolences to Eileen, Ken, and the entire Himes family as Michael's restless heart now rests in the love of the God he helped me and countless others to fall in love with.

Was very saddened to learn of Michael's passing.
He was one of the most brilliant teachers I was so privileged to have at the ICS Seminary in the 1980s.
I can picture him right now running after the Risen Christ in Heaven while calling out to him,
"And ANOTHER THING!!!"

Rest In Peace, Michael...........'cause no one else up there ever will again !!!
What a GIFT you were..........to us ALL !!!

I was saddened to hear about Michael's death. He was such a vibrant, eloquent, and gentle man. His gifts as a speaker and interpreter of Augustine will long be remembered. We have been blessed by his wit and his wisdom. Fraternally, Dick Sparks

I was a regular attendee at BC for his noon mass. He was a brilliant homilist and the attendance was always full. I am sorry for our community loss but heaven has gained a exemplary priest. Ad multos annos !
