Michael Hogarty Sr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 9 to Nov. 11, 2022.
Michael William Hogarty Sr. of Boston's South End died on October 30th, 2022 at the age of 71 years old. He died due to a sudden septic shock and was surrounded by his loved ones as he passed in the hospital. He was born on April 22nd, 1951 in the small village of Locust Gap, Pennsylvania to his now late parents Mary Ellen and Edward Hogarty. Moving to Boston 35 years ago, he brought with him and shared with Boston that small village belief of community, togetherness, communication, and treating everyone with respect. A beloved husband to Jocelyn Hogarty and father to Michael Hogarty Jr., Michael is remembered for his unrelenting kindness and belief in finding the good in all people.

After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Michael then had an outstanding career, working as the Chief of the Mobility Air Force Branch in the United States Department of Defense for 37 years until his retirement. His career brought him around the world, including several years in Germany and Kuwait. He received recognition for his work in 2004, winning the Harold M. Wright Award for Outstanding Civilian Achievement and Service, as well as receiving a letter from President Barack Obama congratulating him on his retirement.

One of Michael's proudest accomplishments was his work in creating the Northeastern Junior Husky Tennis Program at Carter Playground for city youth ages 4 to 9 years old. The program taught teamwork, discipline, and respect in an encouraging, highly parent-involved environment.

He is survived by his wife Jocelyn Hogarty, his son Michael William Hogarty Jr., his daughter-in-law Hannah Hogarty, his brother Edward Hogarty and wife Judy Hogarty, his sister Diane Witte, his niece Michelle Davis and husband Josh Davis, and his nephew David Witte. And his best buddy, Lucky the Cat.

A welcoming, generous, gentle, and thoughtful soul, he will be missed.

Donations may be made in Michael's memory to SquashBusters Urban Youth Enrichment Program via their website SquashBusters.org. Michael cared so greatly about his community and providing opportunities for the youth, and SquashBusters was a program he held fondly in his heart.

All are welcome to attend his memorial service which will be held on Sunday, November 13th from 4:00pm-5:00pm at 187 Church Street, Newton.
