Michael Thomas Jones

Michael, a resident of Fountain Hills, Arizona, passed away on May 1, 2025.

Michael is survived by his wife of 25 years, Merri (McClure) Jones; his son, David Jones (Leslie Mars); his daughters, Karen McLean (Kevin Reynolds) and Catherine Engle (Steven); his sister, Barbara Bake (Chuck); as well as six grandchildren: Vaughn and Ian Hajra, and Asher, Shea, Torin, and Estella Engle. He is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Isabelle Jones.

Michael was a graduate of William & Mary and went on to earn his PhD from The Ohio State University. Michael taught Philosophy and Logic at Eastern Michigan University for 35 years before retiring and relocating to Fountain Hills, Arizona, with Merri.

He loved the outdoors. He went on daily discovery walks with his dog and shared his knowledge of plants at the Desert Botanical Gardens, where he was a docent for 11 years. He and Merri enjoyed over 20 years of camping and RVing, exploring State and National Parks where they met up with friends and family along the way. Northern Michigan and the Arizona mountains were favorite destinations.

Michael also enjoyed working with his hands and was an accomplished woodworker, from pens turned on a lathe to larger pieces of furniture, including a bedroom set. Michael found a calmness in working in his shop and was meticulous in his planning and execution.

As a member of The Fountains Methodist Church, Michael gave of his time by serving meals at A New Leaf men's shelter. He shared his love of music through ringing bells in the handbell choir. With friends met through church, a book club was formed, giving Michael another opportunity to partake in his love of reading.

Michael's wish was to be cremated. A celebration of life is being planned in the fall. Michael was deeply moved by the cosmos. Kindly take a moment to remember Michael in your own way the next time you gaze into the night sky and cherish the memories shared.
