Michael Locker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2015.
Michael Stephen Locker, 63, of Midland, Texas passed away unexpectedly on March 8, 2015.

Michael was born in Lawrence, Kansas to Fran and Walt Locker on October 12, 1951. He graduated from Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He received his Bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University. While working on his degree, he also pursued officer's training school. Upon graduation, he enlisted as an officer in the U.S. Navy where he flew A1 fighter jets. Because of his close ties to his family and his desire to pursue a career in the oil industry he returned to Midland, Texas where he joined his uncle, George Locker, at Buckeye, Inc. In 1997 he assumed controlling ownership of Buckeye, Inc. and The Artesia Lumber Company and soon expanded his corporate interests to include Mattlock Drilling, Briley Trucking and Black Swan Energy. His loyal Buckeye family meant the world to him and many of his employees have been with him for decades.

In addition to professional endeavors, Michael's true passion was the outdoors. Michael's pursuit of hunting and fishing led him to all corners of the world. The fascination began as a young child and remained with him his entire life. He instilled this legacy in both his daughters and his grandchildren. Michael always invited his family and friends to join him and his wife on his many hunting and fishing adventures. Mike combined his attention to detail and pursuit of excellence to achieve his own heaven on earth at Crosshair Ranch. He liked to share this oasis and derived great pleasure from teaching and hosting his many loved ones. In the last few years he enjoyed a passionate relationship with his fly rod.

Michael is preceded in death by his parents, Fran and Walt Locker.

Michael is survived by his wife, Marjorie McLaughlin Locker, his daughter, Laura Locker Johnson and her husband, Sterling Holt Johnson, and their children, Locker, Sam, and Elizabeth, his daughter Alex Locker Bryant and her children, Michael Tucker and Jack, his five furry hunting dogs, his Buckeye family and his two brothers and one sister.

The funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm, March 16, 2015 at St Ann's Catholic Church. Honorary pallbearers are Kevin Blonkvist, Robby Christenson, Terry Copeland, Terry Carpenter, Bob Gaines, Holt Johnson, Albert Metcalfe, Chan Price, George Tucker, Jim Walton, Pat Whitaker and Barry Willingham.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Trinity School Capital Campaign or to the charity of one's choice.

This world has lost the most loving, intelligent man whose generosity was unparalleled.

There is no way to describe the indescribable Michael Locker. HE WAS SO MUCH! I'm so sad without him, though the imprint he made in our lives will continue on. I learned so much from the conversations *infinite intellect* with Michael. Sometimes, a sentence in classic Michael style. I also learned from him when he wasn't speaking a word. An intense though silent thinker. In advance of my only child's wedding, I asked Michael if he would walk me down the aisle. I wanted he and Marjie to be part of my most special life-moments. One evening in passing conversation he asked me if I had ever shot this particular type of rifle. I said "Mike, I've never shot a gun-any gun-period in my life". The next morning "what do you girls have to get done today, I'd like to take a small part of your morning. Is that ok, if it's gonna mess things up, let me know?" We didn't go far, only thing in site was a single row of pumpkins lined up. "C'mon Suz, let's get to shoot'n". I think I did pretty good by Mike, because he made me feel like I could do it. His passion for detail was an immeasurable gift to me. I bought a blank canvas with me on one of my treasure loads of antiques & interiors for the beloved Crosshair Ranch. In brief, the art was placed above the mantel per Mikes request. It was an honor. Something else surprised me, as I was painting i mumbled something about the precision of the circle "the Crosshair". Michael got up from his spot, "Suz, I'd like you to stop right there. I want part of the circle to stay open...continuing on". That was a marked moment, another only "Michael". These are just few of the many blessed memories shared with Michael & Marjie. I was fortunate to be invited into each personal space of "Home with the Lockers". One last thing that was funny, yet AGAIN made special. My most cherished dog, special-needs 3 pound chihuahua "Paloma" was also very welcomed by Michael. Even though I knew he was thinking "that ain't no hunt'n dog". Upon Paloma's last trip to the ranch she very uncharacteristically chose to pee on Mikes deer, with no shame. As if to say "I know Mike loves me"! They are together laughing. "AND ALL THE PEOPLE SAID AMEN"!

"Suz"
affectionately named by the Great Michael Locker

I have been so BLESSED to have known Michael for 36+ years. He was my brother, my mentor, my employer(HEFTY GRANDE),the very best hunting buddy, and my best friend! Michael was the most giving, generous person I had ever known. My heart is broken and empty. I'll miss his phone calls, "Are you selling any mud? Anyone mad at us? Do we have any fires to put out? I am so lost without Michael. My life will be forever changed. Marge, Laura, Alex, I will always be here for you. My Buckeye family we have each other, we are in this together.

Cousin Mike and I made some fine memories as kids then again as young adults. I had some of the best times of my life hunting and fishing with my Cousin Mike. I've yet to know a more generous person. My heart goes out to those that knew and loved him. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow.
