Michael Lyman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 29, 2025.
South Bend - Michael William Lyman, a cherished husband, dedicated serviceman, and master craftsman, passed away unexpectedly in his home on the morning of Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at 9:15am. Born on June 1, 1950, in Lafayette, Indiana, Mike's journey was one of passion, service, and love, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.

Mike's early life in Lafayette laid the foundation for his strong character and work ethic. He was the beloved son of the late Harry B. and Lou Ellen (Renville) Lyman. His brother, Ed, also preceded him death.

After graduating from high school, Mike answered the call of duty and served with honor in the United States Air Force. His commitment to his country was unwavering, and his service was a source of great pride. Upon returning to civilian life, Mike embarked on a successful career initially as a machine operator and then as an NC programmer at Fairfield Manufacturing in Lafayette over a 29-year career. In 2003, he became a manufacturing engineer at Shafer Gear in South Bend, IN, before retiring in 2017. Even after retirement, he continued to share his expertise, working part-time at Lowe's for four years.

Mike's love for history, especially military history, was profound. It was fitting that he married the love of his life, Michelle (France) Lyman, on June 6, 1992, the anniversary of D-Day, a date that held great significance for them both. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared interests spanning more than three decades.

Michelle affectionately referred to Mike as the "best dog dad ever." His love for animals, especially dogs and cats, was a testament to his compassionate nature. His pets were not just companions but members of the family, and he helped care for them with the utmost devotion.

A man of many talents, Mike possessed a remarkable ability to create and fix anything. His huge woodshop was a place of creation and innovation, where Michelle's imagination met Mike's skilled hands. Whether it was carpentry, electrical, or plumbing, there was no challenge too great for him. He also served as the at-home IT manager for Michelle, ensuring everything ran smoothly. Mike's wife, Michelle, may have been the planner, but he enjoyed and thrived on the challenges put before him. Mike took care of everything mechanical and technical, while she complemented him in more domestic pursuits, always ensuring that their life together was as beautiful and organized as possible, both of them prioritizing time spent at home together. They shared a love for the outdoors and worked together in their yard and garden, a sanctuary for both of them.

Mike's life was one of loving dedication to his home, his country, and his passions. His legacy will live on in the memories of those who loved him and the impact he made on the world around him. He will be remembered as a very calm and patient man who had the confidence and skill to make things happen - he truly could do it all, and always with a heart full of love especially for Michelle.

Visitation for Michael William Lyman will be held from 4:00-6:00pm on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN. Military Honors will be accorded at 4:00pm in the funeral home, a fitting tribute to a man who served his country with distinction.
