Michael Makris Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 25, 2024.
Michael Makris passed away peacefully in his home in Houston, Texas at the age of 70 years old. As we honor his life, we are reminded of the immense impact he had on each of us. Michael, or Mike as many affectionately called him, was the embodiment of love, joy, and vitality; an example that undoubtedly impacted anyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Mike is survived by his three children Justin (Nathalie), Cassidy, and Courtney, as well as his siblings Dexter (Bob), Owen, and Brett (Cindy).

Born on April 12, 1953, in Bayonne, New Jersey, Mike was a magnetic person from the very beginning. The son of Tony and Harriett Makris, he brought warmth and laughter into their home. His journey took him to Roger Williams University, where he excelled both academically and athletically. As a standout athlete, he not only lettered in three sports (baseball, basketball, and soccer), but he also captained the baseball team for two years, showcasing his leadership and ability to motivate those around him.

In 1977, Mike made his way to Houston, Texas, where he planted roots and became the linchpin we all knew and cherished. He co-founded City Power Equipment, a venture that was certainly successful, but more importantly to Mike, became a place where he turned clients into lifelong friends who became like family. In addition to having an entrepreneurial spirit, Mike invested in his community through his faith. His involvement in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral softball league and annual Greek festival brought him closer to his roots and forged lifelong friendships. His unwavering devotion to God was evident in the sincerity and simplicity with which he lived his life.

But most notably, one of Mike's greatest passions of over 25 years was cycling. His dedication to supporting the National MS Society by participating in the MS150 almost every year showcased his commitment to making a difference and brought him immense joy and fulfillment. As he rode alongside fellow enthusiasts, he would share his expertise and boundless enthusiasm for life itself, inspiring others to push beyond their limits and embrace the journey.

Mike was a people person in the truest sense; he never knew a stranger and effortlessly made friends wherever he went. Within the first few minutes, he nicknamed every person he met, always finding a way to immediately connect with them and make them smile. He had a unique ability to make everyone feel important and special. His infectious charisma and genuine interest in others made everyone feel valued and appreciated. It was a testament to his ability to see the best in every individual, a gift that left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. And of course, Mike's love and affection extended to his dogs Hercules, Koukla, and Niko. They were cherished members of the family, bringing him endless joy and companionship.

As we reflect on Mike's life, we are reminded of the countless lives he touched and feel grateful for the profound impact he had on each of us. His unwavering love, infectious spirit, and boundless kindness will never cease to inspire us. Though he may no longer be with us, his passion for life and love for people will live on in our hearts forever.

I was fortunate to know Michael his last year at Roger Williams. He lit up every room he entered and seeing him was a bright spot in my day. Reading this beautifully written obituary, it appears little changed over the last several decades. Clearly, he remained warm, caring, dedicated to putting forth his best and to being a bright light in the lives of everyone he met.

My heart breaks for his family, friends and colleagues. I wish you all peace and the gift of your many loving, happy memories. May Mike's memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

Softball and cycling were 2 sports we shared together and mostly cycling. Mike always pushed me to be stronger and better cyclist. He always had nicknames for people. He called me FaceJock or Johnny. I moved to Dallas area almost 3 years ago and he was one of the only friends that would call and check on me periodically. That meant a lot that he cared and I know that Mike had that type of care for many of his friends and certainly his family. He was always asking me to come over and order him the online cycling gear from China that I found.
