Michael Marble

Fort Bragg, CA

Michael Sharp Marble of Fort Bragg died suddenly November 7, 2015, doing what he loved to do. He was born in Bakersfield, CA, to Dana E. and Margaret S. Marble on June 6, 1938. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1956 and joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for 4 years as crew chief. Mike worked for a short while as a truck driver in Santa Paula area then came to Fort Bragg in 1962 with his young family to begin a career in the woods. He worked driving logging trucks for Union Lumber Co. and retired from tree falling for Georgia Pacific in 1986 after 25 years.

Mike enjoyed a life-long passion for fishing, building a 26' wooden boat while he recovered from a woods accident. He attended the College of the Redwoods and then became a commercial pilot and flight instructor in the 1980's. He and his second wife built their home in Cleone in the early 1980's during which time he dove for urchins by day and worked at the mill in the evenings. He participated in building a 55' fishing boat, the Adrienne A, which was launched in 1993 and fished the South Pacific for albacore with his son John and wife Adrienne. At the beginning of their 1996 albacore trip he and his son John rescued a stranded sailor 1000 miles off the coast of Mexico, and subsequently returned to retrieve the abandoned sailboat.

Mike retired from commercial fishing in 2005 and continued to fish for salmon, crab, and albacore. At the age of 70, Mike became an avid tree climber, trimming many of his own trees and those of his friends and neighbors.

Mike is survived by his wife of 38 years, Adrienne Ardito, his three accomplished children, Jeff, John, Judy (Phelps) and their mother Linda Hendricks, his brother Tim Marble of Chico, and his sister Melinda Marble Cantor of Cambridge, MA. He has six grandchildren, 2 great granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his huge community of friends who knew him to be a loving and generous man. Mike exercised at the Sports Club with enthusiasm where he loved to "better his best".

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Pentecost Hall on January 9, 2016 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Noyo Women for Fisheries (P.O. Box 1087 Fort Bragg, CA, 95437, attn: Julee Estes)

Accomplished thresher shark fisherman Mike befriended "Fitznofish" on the Ventura Pier in 1955 and became part of my life. I got my own boat and joined him, brother Tim, and Ben Henke in the summers of 55 and 56. In the off season, we hot rodded my Chevy Stovebolt Six. Mike's mantra: "Speed! Power! Acceleration! Noise! Vibration!" Oh, the fishing and car stories I could tell to someone not at liberty to leave. Mike went on to fish boats he built beyond the International Date Line, fly the vintage Stearman he rebuilt, and build his own house. Mike was Jack London's Sailor on Horseback. He became my hero on the Ventura Pier in 1955 and remains there still.

Condolences to Adrienne, Tim and other of his family and friends I've not met. Mike was a good and decent man and more fun to be with than anybody I've ever known.

Steve and I were blessed to share lunch and great conversation with Mike and Adrienne a few years ago and we will cherish that memory. Mike Marble stories were abound within the Swenerton family time after time which allowed us to "Know who Mike was" indirectly. The news of his passing caused time to stop for us. We sat in silence trying to absorb the news. Mike Marble's essence will remain with us until we meet again. Our love to you Adrienne, Debbie and Steve Swenerton.

My heart goes out to Adrienne and the family. What a wonderful man - I have never met such a caring, giving person as Mike. Always smiling, always joking around! I was fortunate to spend a little time with him a few months ago and I had so much respect and adoration for him. Such a caring, loving Father and Husband. He truly was an amazing person. Thank you for being so hospitable and I will never forget the time I did get to spend with you and get to know you! God definitely took a good one........rest in Peace my friend!

Michael was a dear friend and brother to the Millis clan. He was true blue and an inspiration to us all. We are all sorrier than we can say for the loss to Adrienne and his family. We all appreciated his courage and kindness, his humor and zest for life. I know we'll be telling Mike Marble stories for years to come.

Mike was the best neighbor and friend I could ever have had. His generous, adventuresome spirit endeared him to many far and wide. No words can express the sadness that we feel at his passing, and thelove and admiration that we all had for this gentle, kind, fun loving spirit. I will miss you Mike, more than words can say and we grief for his widow, Adrienne, his wonderful children, his former wife and good friend Linda and all whose lives he touched. I will always remember his twinkling eyes and hear his wonderful laugh
