Mary Jean - I'm sorry for your loss. Condolences to you and your family. I recall the summer days on Campground Beach where Michael and my brother Jerry used to play for hours on end. The loudest, busiest and energetic kids on the beach. The planning, talking, echoes of laughter and discussing water strategies at that freshwater pipe. My mother and your father were just as loud. Every year discussing traffic, crowds, the target ship, and tides. I still try to listen for the loudest, happiest new people but no one compares. Peace be with you.

I had just moved out to LA from Boston in early 1991, and felt like a fish out of water. Mike was one of the first guys in the sport I met out there, and he put me at ease by sharing his own experience as a transplanted East Coast guy. I got to know him over the next few years, and he was always genuine, funny, humble, and appreciated each and every one of his many fans. Mike was one of the best parts of the sport in the 1990's, and his memory will always live on both for those of us who knew him and the millions more who were inspired by his physique and personality.

I was a budding Bodybuilder fresh off the farm in LA during the mid 90s. Mike used to come in the restaurant where I worked, he always had a good word to say. Rest easy Mike.
