Remembering Michael Matthews (April 7, 1999 - January 17, 2025) The world lost a truly special soul on January 17, 2025, but the love, laughter, and memories Michael left behind will never fade. A son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, cat dad, and friend, Michael's presence was a gift to everyone who knew him. Born on April 7, 1999, Michael was the beloved son of Brooke and Matt English, grandson of Don and Linda Matthews and the deeply loved brother of Morgan, Cameron, Ethan, and Korben. He was the adored nephew of Ryan and Heather Matthews and the beloved cousin of Jaeden and Bella. His cat, Kindred, was not just a pet but his steadfast companion, and he was a loyal friend to many. Michael had a heart of gold and an unmatched ability to connect with others. Whether through a warm smile, a shared joke, or an act of kindness, he made everyone feel seen and valued. Michael was a natural gamer from childhood, spending countless hours playing with his sister, Morgan. As he grew up, gaming remained a constant in his life-whether battling in Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, or diving into the latest video games. He was also a board game enthusiast, always ready for family game nights. Some of his favorite memories were from late-night Risk battles, including one game where he and Morgan were the last two standing, locked in a battle of wills until the early hours of the morning. One game especially close to his heart was Canasta, a family favorite. Michael was so good at it that when he partnered with Morgan, they were unstoppable-so much so that the rest of the family banned them from being on the same team. Michael also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. As kids, he and his siblings spent endless days riding bikes, playing capture the flag, and exploring nature together. His adventurous spirit never faded, and he always found joy in being outside, whether it was camping, hiking, or simply taking a walk. A proud graduate of Seaside High School's Class of 2017, Michael moved to Bend to attend Central Oregon Community College. He lived there for about five years, creating lasting friendships and new experiences. Whether spending time in nature, gaming with friends, or cooking up something new, Michael made the most of his time there before eventually returning home to Seaside. One of the places that truly captured Michael's heart was Camp Kiwanilong. As a child, he spent magical summers there, first as a camper, then a Counselor-in-Training, and finally as Counselor Nova, a name that became synonymous with joy and laughter at camp. He had a special talent for making even the shyest camper burst into laughter-whether through goofy campfire songs, spontaneous games, or his silly dance moves during talent night. He was the counselor who made kids feel welcome, safe and special. Michael was a man of many passions. He had an incredible mind, able to solve a Rubik's Cube in seconds. He adored animals, especially cats, and had an undeniable way of connecting with them. To meet Michael was to feel instantly at ease. Michael is deeply missed by his loving family, his many friends and all whose lives he brightened. His memory will forever be carried in every late-night game, every shared meal, every campfire story, and every act of kindness that keeps his spirit alive.
