Michael Mayer Obituary
Joplin -- Dr. Michael Eugene Mayer passed away at his home in Joplin, MO on July 17, 2025. He was born on January 18,1952 and spent his formative years attending St, James Elementary School in Denver and later graduated from Mullen High School.
He had a keen intellect and received a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Kansas, followed by a PhD at the University of Wyoming. He spent his career as professor teaching communications at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Additionally, he coached Debate at both the high school and college levels. Upon retirement, he relocated to Joplin because he loved "the heartland" and wanted to be near his many cousins on his mother's side and close to Denver to visit his brother and cousin on his father's side.
Mike had a sarcastic and crazy sense of humor and enjoyed playing softball, collecting coins, playing Sudoku, enjoying innumerable televised sports and news programs, and listening to and attending concerts of his beloved Rolling Stones. He also tutored students in Joplin and received recognition for these efforts.
He is survived by his brother, John P. Mayer of Denver. He led a life of quiet dedication to his interests and to his friends and family. His presence will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

The news of Mike's passing saddens me. I was an undergraduate at ASU in the late 1970s Mike taught me COM100 (and gave me a B...for good reason) and the research methods class. He was a very helpful teacher who was willing to guide me when I really needed it. Three decades later, I returned to ASU as a faculty member and was able to work with Mike until he retired. He was the same helpful soul and great teacher.

My deepest sympathy John. I loved Michael so much; he and I enjoyed our time together during our visits to a Denver or the Mayers trips to St. Joe for the holidays. I just wish we´d got together recently. Love you, Michael, rest in peace.
