Michael Mayhew Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 27, 2020.
Michael "Mick" L. Mayhew

79, of Newcomerstown, Ohio, peacefully went to Heaven on Thursday, December 24, 2020 at Lafayette Pointe after a period of declining health. Mick was born on October 7, 1941, in Coshocton, Ohio, to the late Ianthus and Ruth (Ortt) Mayhew. After graduating from Newcomerstown High School, Mick enlisted in the US Navy and served our country from 1959-1963. His distinguished service included a special appointment aboard the USS Long Beach. After his enlistment, Mick worked briefly with Columbia Gas then for several years as a salesman for the Frito Lay Company. During that time, he started working with his father-in-law, Chris Yanai, doing taxes. He took over that business in 1981, forming Mayhew's Tax Service, where he worked until his retirement in 2010. He loved his tax business and enjoyed the social time with his customers as much as being able to help them. Mick is remembered for always having a joke to tell and his love for Ohio State Buckeyes football. He never missed a football game unless he was driving the Newcomerstown Band's instrument truck. Mick had a servant's heart. He was the "Voice of the Trojans," announcing football games for 25 years. His service included being elected to the Newcomerstown Town Council, a member of the American Legion, Lion's Club, and Jaycees, and years on the Cemetery Board, Park Board, and Newcomerstown Scholarship Foundation. Mick was a long-standing member of the Newcomerstown Elks, where he was in charge for many years for delivering Christmas baskets and placing flags on Veteran's graves. He worked with his wife, Mary, as track and cross-country officials for the Eastern District for years. He was a devout Catholic and parishioner at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church.

Mick's love for his family was well known and he was a devoted husband, father, and "Grampy." He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary (Yanai); children, Mariann (Jeff) Harding and Michael Mayhew; grandchildren, Brittany Mayhew, Kate, and Sarah Montgomery, all of Newcomerstown, and Michael Montgomery of Marietta, Ga.; brother, Skeeter (Arlene) Mayhew of Newcomerstown; Dean (Annie) Kail of Newcomerstown, Chris (Azy) Yanai of Powell, Ohio, Craig (Margaret) Ridgway of Stuart, Florida, and Paul (Gwen) Yanai of New Philadelphia; his beloved dog, Sophie; and several nieces and nephews. Mick is preceded in death by his brothers, David Mayhew and Butch Mayhew.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 28th, 2020 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Addy Funeral home in Newcomerstown. Graveside services will be held Tuesday December 29, 2020 at 2:30 p.m. at West Lawn Cemetery in Newcomerstown. Military Services will be conducted by the Newcomerstown Veterans Honor Guard.

Those wishing to express their fondest memories of Mick may do so by visiting the online obituaries link on the Addy's Funeral Home website.
