Michael McDonough Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 6 to Feb. 8, 2024.
Michael Patrick McDonough, age 90, passed away peacefully at home in Yarmouth

Port, MA on February 4, 2024 after valiantly fighting several chronic illnesses.

Throughout it all, he was loved by his family and his caregivers for his pleasant

personality, sense of humor and quick wit.

Michael was born and raised in South Boston. He served our country by enlisting as a

soldier in the Korean War. Michael was a butcher who advanced his career through

further education and training across the United States. Michael had a 30-year career

as a federal meat inspector and raised his family in Foxborough. He was a self-taught

gardener, handyman, landscaper and farmer. He retired to Nantucket and enjoyed

family visits, long walks in nature, reading, his wonderful neighbors and rebuilding

tractors as a hobby.

Michael was a hard worker who often held two or three jobs at a time. He was fiscally

responsible and always put the needs of his family before his own. He lived by the

motto to have more money you have to work more and/or spend less. He taught his

children fiscal responsibility but indulged his grandchildren. He was a wonderful

example of what a father should be.

Michael is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Marilyn (King) McDonough. He is

also survived by his six children, Denise Larner, Michael McDonough, Jr. and his wife

Jellie, Marilyn Hughes and her partner Peter Van de Woestyne, Kelly King Briggs and

her husband Kurt Briggs, Paula Kelley and her husband Michael Leary and Shawn

McDonough and his wife Kim. He has 16 loving grandchildren and 18 great

grandchildren and his beloved nieces and nephews who will greatly miss him. He is

predeceased by his loving parents Walter and Julia McDonough, who immigrated to

Boston from Ireland, and his 15 siblings.

Michael was a devoted husband, dedicated and diligent father, grandfather and great

grandfather and a role model for honesty and equality who believed you can

accomplish anything through hard work.

A special thanks to the caregivers who lovingly helped care for him.

A visitation will be held at Chapman Funerals and Cremations 74 Algonquin Ave. (Rte 151) Mashpee on

Friday February 16, 2024 from 10:30am to 12:30pm. A celebration of life will follow at 12:30pm. Burial

will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 1:45PM.
