Michael McGinn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 5, 2025.
Dr. Michael "Mike" McGinn

Mike was a loving partner, devoted friend, and compassionate listener who always put others before himself. Time with him meant laughter, thoughtful conversation, and words of insight and wisdom. He found joy in sailing with the Knickerbocker Sailing Association, and in quiet walks through Morningside Park or along the beaches of Long Island, taking in the world with his characteristic blend of curiosity and wonder.

A proud gay man, Mike lived authentically and fully. Pride was not just a celebration but a way of life - open, joyful, and without compromise. He created safe spaces for others, offering kindness and understanding to those who needed someone to listen. His advocacy for self-care and mental health guided both his professional work and his daily life.

After retiring in 2024, Mike's days were filled with visits to his dear friend Ed in Pennsylvania, holidays with his sister and family in Rhode Island, and countless brunches and dinners with his close circle of New York friends. He formed strong bonds with his neighbors, especially the sisters next door, and remained loyal to his past partners, always supporting them in meaningful ways. Generous with his time, energy, and spirit, he touched countless lives for the better.

Mike is remembered by his sister Patricia and her family, his lifelong friend Ed Dougherty, his past partner Jason Rivera, and a wide circle of beloved friends in New York and beyond. To so many, he was a source of warmth, humor, and acceptance.

Farewell, beautiful soul. You lived as yourself, loved as yourself, and made the world a kinder, brighter place. You will be deeply missed and forever loved.
