Michael Kevin McHale, 71, of Boca Raton, FL passed away on December 2nd, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mike was born in Queens, NY and his strong accent gave that information away immediately. His mother died when he was 3 years old, and he grew up with his grandparents until his father met Betty, and their families merged. Mike never made a distinction between his sister, 6 step siblings, and half sister- they were all his family.
As a child, Mike loved baseball and was an altar boy who hated Catholic School. After graduating high school, he served in the Army and held several jobs until he found his passion as a transit cop in the NY Subway system.
He married Beth in 1976 and was over the moon when his three children, Kevin (Joanna), Sara (Howard), and Marissa (Victor) were born. They eventually moved from NY and began their life in South Florida. He was beloved at Loggers Run Middle School and Olympic Heights High School as a school police officer, and for many years after he left his job, former students would excitedly run up to him calling for Officer McHale. He found joy in any job he took on, from working as a security officer to shipping parcels to driving for Uber.
Mike met Robin Lopato Hest in 2003 and they became best friends, getting engaged in 2005 and finally marrying in August 2022. He supported her throughout life’s challenges, offering calm and perspective and asking, “Is anybody getting shot? No? Then there’s nothing to worry about.” Together, they enjoyed seeing his children and Robin’s children Ivy (Seth) and Ian grow up, have careers, find love, and start families of their own.
Mike was funny, kind, generous, wise, and down to earth. He could watch videos of cute toddlers forever, especially videos of his grandkidsBrayden, Levi, Reagan and Maurice. He called himself the Christmas Kid and looked forward to any holiday he could spend with family. He loved singing oldies, watching classical movies and documentaries, and going to the theater. He cried at sappy commercials and cared deeply about his friends and family. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of your choice.

I worked with Mike in a security job from 2008 - 2012. He was a great stand up guy, one of my former NYers. We both previously held law enforcement jobs for NYC and had a deep respect for each other.
To know him, was to like him. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Mike was my cousin, my mom's brother's son. We saw each other as young kids and then I moved across the country. I moved to Florida and in 1999 I wound up in the same city as Mike. We bumped into one another at the gym one day in 2003 eyeing the same stationary bike. That day was the beginning of a very strong bond that grew stronger over 20 years. I knew Mike had my back and I felt his unconditional love. He was like an older brother to me. He was there for support during some challenging times and his famous words were, "we are family, this is what we do." This is a great loss for all and my heart goes out to all of Mike's family and friends. May he rest in peace.

He was my brother and always a joy to be around. I was gone most of the time but whenever I came home It was as if it was the next day. Mike had a way of relaxing the area (room-yard-car, etc.) that made it easy to be around him.

Mickey, you were always a great cop and friend. I remember the time we were on a re-union cruise and we had a ball. I also remember the time when you voluntered to drive myself ad a few others to my plane parked at ormand beach airport. I had to fly these guys back to ft. lauderdale. that was a great trip. there was also the time when my brother died and you and Robin respectfully attended his funeral service. You were always a great trooper and more than a friend. I could always count on you. You were always there. RIP my friend, and condolences to Robin and the family.
