Michael T "Mike" McLaughlin

Michael T. McLaughlin, 84, of El Sobrante, CA, passed away on April 20, 2024 after a lengthy illness. During his final days, he was surrounded by loving family, devoted friends, and wonderful caregivers.

Born in Oakland, CA on September 2, 1939 to Thomas and Roberta McLaughlin, Mike was raised with his two brothers, Steven and Peter, in Kensington, CA. In 1976, he married his wife of 48 years, Barbara, and had two sons, Mark and Shaun. Mike, a graduate of El Cerrito High School, earned a degree in physical education and a master of arts degree from San Francisco State University.

In the 1960s, Mike served in the National Guard. He then dedicated his career to education, teaching middle school P.E. in the Richmond Unified School District before becoming a counselor. In 1983, he was presented with an opportunity to leave the teaching world and pursue a business career in the coffee industry. He took the leap and started a small roasting company, with Barbara at his side, as specialty coffee began to rise to the forefront of the coffee industry. Mike was very proud of the fact that McLaughlin Coffee Company just celebrated its 40th anniversary, with his sons now at the helm.

A passionate golfer, Mike won numerous championships and shared his love for the sport with his family. He also enjoyed playing pool, gardening, traveling with his wife Barbara, listening to vintage R&B music, and cherishing moments with loved ones.

Mike had a magic in his ability to connect with people. His welcoming manner and his sense of humor instantly drew people to him upon first meeting. He was blessed with the friendship of many, many people who cared about him deeply because of the warm, welcoming person he was.

Mike is survived by his wife Barbara, sons Mark (Sarah) and Shaun, grandchildren Riley and Kinsley, sister-in-law Donna Marsicano, nephews Steven Jr. and Christopher McLaughlin, and several cousins.

Services will be private, with a Celebration of Life planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike's name may be made to the Endovision Foundation at endovision.org/donate. Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito, CA, is assisting with arrangements.
