Michael McRae Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 19, 2023.
Michael Keith McRae resident of Oakland, California passed away peacefully at the age of 68 on December 16, 2023.

Michael was born on July 9, 1955, to James McRae and Severba James McRae Villela in Little Rock, Arkansas. Michael graduated from Skyline High School in Oakland. He discovered his passion for sports at an early age. He participated in basketball, football, and Track and Field. Gifted with amazing athletic ability he quickly rose to prominence in the local athletic scene. Competing for the Bay Area Striders and Chabot Community College, his prowess on the track became evident, foreshadowing a remarkable athletic career.

As a dedicated and disciplined athlete, Michael represented not only himself but also his country on the grand stage of the 1984 Olympic Games. His commitment to excellence was displayed, as he showcased the true essence of sportsmanship and inspired athletes worldwide.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Michael was known for his patience, humility, and kindness as his contributions extended beyond the track. He actively mentored young athletes, fostering a sense of unity. His impact on the lives he touched was immeasurable, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.

While Michael gained acclaim as an Olympian, his technical prowess extended into the realm of computer technology. Renowned for his exceptional technical skills, Michael exhibited a keen aptitude for building computers and combining components with precision and expertise. His troubleshooting abilities were unmatched. He approached challenges with a methodical mindset, earning him respect not only as a sports icon but also as a proficient technologist.

Michael loved music. On the saxophone, as a youth, he graced the halls of his local church with soulful melodies that resonated with congregants. At home he found solace in the saxophone, indulging in impromptu sessions with jazz music playing in the background. Whether playing for himself or friends and family, his saxophone echoed the pure pleasure he found in the art, a testament to his love for the improvisational spirit of jazz.

Michael was employed at Timco Document Solutions, Merritt College, FedEx, and most recently retiring from the United States Post Office.

Michael is now reunited with the love of his life, his wife, Melody McRae, who passed away on January 17, 1987. Together their bond was a testament to enduring love and mutual support. Melody played an integral role in his life, offering unwavering encouragement during his pursuits as an Olympian and technologist.

Michael is survived by his brothers Ronald McRae, Kevin Villela, and Alan Villela, Sister-in-Law Alicia Villela, nephew Ronald McRae Jr, and Alex Villela, and nieces Stacey Lovett, Alana Villela, Ava Villela and Isabelle Villela.

Gravesite service will be held at Rolling Hills Memorial Park (Serenity 2124), 4100 Hilltop Dr., Richmond, CA 94803 on Friday, December 22nd at 11am.

In loving memory of Mike,

Today, we gather to celebrate the life of a cherished soul, a dear friend, and a spiritual companion. Mike's journey on this earthly plane touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark of warmth, kindness, and faith.

As we remember the days when we shared pews at church and raced together on the track at Skyline, let us reflect on the spiritual bond that united us. In those moments of worship, we found solace, strength, and a shared connection that transcended the physical realm. Mike's presence was a testament to the beauty of spiritual fellowship, reminding us that our journey is not walked alone but in the company of those who share our beliefs and values.

In the tapestry of our memories, we find the threads of laughter, camaraderie, and the shared experiences that made our bond with Mike so special. His father's connection with my aunt wove our lives together in ways that are truly divine. The relationships we build in this life are not mere coincidences; they are part of a greater design, a cosmic dance that brings souls together for shared lessons and growth.

As we bid farewell to Mike's physical presence, let us remember the essence of his spirit - a spirit that will forever echo in the halls of our hearts. In the face of grief, let our faith be a guiding light, knowing that, just as we ran side by side on the track, Mike now runs on a celestial path, free from the constraints of this world.

May we find solace in the knowledge that our departed friend is embraced by the eternal love and mercy of the Divine. As we mourn the loss of his earthly presence, let us also celebrate the reunion that awaits us beyond the veil of this transient existence.

May Mike's soul rest in peace, and may the memories of our shared spiritual journey continue to inspire and uplift us in the days ahead.

With heartfelt condolences and spiritual solidarity,

Cory Jefferies

I came to know Mike through his brother Ronald at Stonehurst Elementary School in Oakland. He was one of "the big boys"....a superior athlete even then. He stood out.

Michael was a "beast" in football. I looked up to him as he was played the game and ran track. As his brother Ronald became a close friend. He will surely be missed.

So many memories of the laughter, the music and most all we were family. You, James and Ronald were my brothers and my friends. In loving memory of a wonderful person you'll always be to me. My prayers that God will comfort your family. I'll love you and miss you always. Miranda
