Michael Meyer 59 passed away on January 18th 2022. Michael was the was the loving husband of Silvie cherished brother to Linda and beloved relative, friend and colleague to many others.
Michael dedicated his life and career to serving others, working for organizations including SourceAmerica,Sinai Hospital, and the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute before joining the Goodwill organization. During his tenure with Goodwill, he held leadership positions at the local and national levels, most recently serving as the CEO of Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley in Frederick, Maryland (GIMV), and then as a senior advisor following the merger with Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona (GCNA).
Michael was instrumental in the successful merger of GIMV and GCNA, and played a strategic role in helping to determine a future direction for providing the best possible services in that market. During his time with Goodwill, Michael worked together with the International Council of Shopping Centers to get restrictions against thrift stores removed from major retailers. Michael cared deeply about the mission of Goodwill and was committed to providing employment and training opportunities to individuals with barriers to employment.
Jim Martin, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Lane and South Counties stated, “Michael was a passionate advocate for the Movement, an innovator who always wanted to push the envelope so that he could push our mission forward, always.”
A proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Michael carried himself with a sense of purpose. He also had a great sense of humor and enjoyed life to the fullest.
Lisa Rusyniak, President & CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. shares, “Maya Angelou once wrote. ‘I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.’ Many may not know that Michael was one of those leaders. He always made his employees and the people he served in Monocacy feel included, loved, and appreciated. He made everyone feel not just good, but also important and valued, regardless of their position in the organization. We truly lost a Goodwill warrior, colleague, and friend today.”
Visitation will be held at the at the Elms Funeral Home, 7600 W. Grand Avenue, Elmwood Park IL on Monday January 24, 2022 from 3PM to 8PM.

I was ready to leave Goodwill, when Michael showed up and became my boss. He gave me the purpose to stay, made working at GII fun again, and ultimately is responsible for where I am today professionally, because of that. I wish I had had the chance to thank him for all he did for me. As a Duke fan, it wasn’t always easy working for a die-hard Maryland fan, but we made it work. I will forever be grateful to him for so much. I am just sorry I didn’t take the time to say so when he was still here.

I had the privilege of working with Michael when I first joined NISH and quickly recognized his professionalism, passion for mission and commitment to those he served. Michael was an incredible co-worker, mentor, friend and wonderful partner in support of the creation of employment for people with disabilities. I have just as many equally amusing and funny memories of Michael as I do of him showing visionary leadership within his professional community. Michael you will be missed, but never forgotten, and I hope to carry forward what you taught me during the time we worked together.

Michael was a great guy. Heartbroken to hear of his passing. Enjoyed working with him over the years. Began my NISH/SourceAmerica career learning from Michael. Many hours on the road back and forth to NJ. Still cherish the "Bob's Big Boy Toy" he got for my office a reminder of good times. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.

I write this on behave of all Chicago Paragliding pilots , that Michael will be dearly missed. He touched many with his personality , always willing to help and wealth of knowledge he possessed. I always enjoyed seeing Mike at the Goodwill conferences. Although many of our conversations were in the halls of the conferences and brief, I always picked up some wisdom from him. When I just learning about contracts, he was always helpful. I remember listening to him present and learning so much. Know he touched and changed so many lives. May you find peace and comfort knowing he made a difference in this world!!!

.Words cannot express the heartbreak I am feeling. Michael came into my life and the life of my family over 40 years ago when he left his service as a U. S. Marine Corps Sargent. I would have to write a book to capture all of the times we have shared. We shared an awesome working relationship over the years, working for many companies as I watched him develop into an awesome leader. He always thought of me as "Mom" and because of our working relationship would refer to me as "Lucky". He was the big brother to my daughters. He was always there when we needed him through family difficulties and I stood by him through several rough marriages, business endeavors, and health issues. Michael did not have an easy path but he always kept the faith and was always looking for something exciting to accomplish. His sense of humor always complimented mine so we had some great fun over the years. RIP sweet Michael we love you! Norman, Lucky, Penney and Pamala

Michael was such a passionate force within the Goodwill movement, driven by his love for the mission and his unyielding need to modernize it to stay around for another 100 years. I will always remember his flair and friendship and will greatly miss sharing stories and drinks with such a caring, righteous, and courageous man. The Goodwill movement will always feel the lack. For those of us that are fans of Maryland Terrapins football, it was always a pleasure to tailgate with Mike and talk about the team, the University, and if we were all going to a bowl game together. He had a unique sense of humor, and anyone around him was always laughing. He provided the music for each tailgate, and his musical interests were wide ranging, and provided even more laughter. The music was on one volume...loud! I will always think of him while watching Terps football from now on.....maybe he can give the team some heavenly assistance! My wife and I send our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. May his memory be a blessing.
