Michael “Mike” Fleming Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 30, 2024.
Michael "Mike" D. Fleming, aged 76, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away on July 16, 2024. Born on November 11, 1947, in Alton, Illinois. Mike was a spirited individual known for his sharp wit and no nonsense attitude. He dedicated his life to the automotive industry, where his passion for cars ranged from stock cars to Grand Prix racing.

Educationally, Mike honed his engineering skills by attending the General Motors School of Engineering after graduating from Marquette High School in Alton, IL. After serving a year in the U.S. Navy at San Diego, CA, during the tail end of the Vietnam War, Mike embarked on a prolific career that spanned several major companies. He worked at McDonnell Douglas, Rubber Tire Co., and was notably involved with Subaru, Mazda, Hyundai, and later as a private automotive consultant.

His love for cars was not just professional; it was a profound personal hobby. Mike was a regular at automobile auctions and the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. He relished all forms of car racing and was an avid collector of car magazines and books. His encounters with celebrities like George Bush, Jay Leno and Paul Newman during automotive events were among the cherished highlights of his adventures. After his retirement, Mike found joy in helping others choose the right car, from sleek Corvettes to practical family SUVs. His life was a testament to his love for cars and his desire to share this passion with others.

From an early age he had an interest in air travel, spending time with his father, a Supervisor of Mechanics for Eastern Airlines. As an adult he took several international trips, and especially enjoyed visiting Japan and the U.K. He maintained a lifelong love of British comedy. In his career he traveled regularly for work, and took pride in his frequent flyer status. Family and friends could count on him for a dining recommendation in a remarkable number of cities.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Thelma June (French) Fleming. He is survived by his loving spouse, Dr Denise D'Harlingue, daughter Michelle Fleming, brothers Patrick and Dan Fleming, sister-in-laws Janet & Gail Fleming, and several nieces and nephews.

Mike's legacy will be remembered by all who knew him, both in the automotive world and beyond. As per his wishes, there will be no services. Contributions in memory of Mike can also be forgone as per his request. His life, filled with the roar of engines and the thrill of the race, leaves a lasting imprint on the hearts of his family and friends.

I had the pleasure of being Mike's hairstylist for the past 3 years. I enjoyed our talks about traveling and cars. He was such a kind spirit and a joy to be around. He spoke every visit of his love for his wife and family. Rest in Paradise Mike.

Mike was a dear friend of mine for over 40 years. I can't recall how many trips we made together to Pebble Beach and Scottsdale in January. And yes, Mike's abundance of frequent flyer and hotel miles always provided us with top drawer accommodations.
One memory stands out as I remember Mike. One year at the Pebble Beach Concourse we had a space on "the velvet rope" to watch the finalists in each class line up for their awards. By some divine luck, the martini concession was directly behind us. As I was in line for our first (of many) martinis I struck-up a conversation with the Keno brothers of "Antiques Roadshow" fame. They joined us on the "rope" and let's just say that many rounds were shared between the four of us that afternoon as well as some marvelous chat about everything cars.
It was a great outing which I will remember always.
I'll miss my friend greatly. RIP Mike.

I worked in the Mazda Gulf Region office with Mike for many years and always enjoyed his knowledge and wanting to do the right thing. I especially enjoyed the banter between Mike and other members of the service team - Rig Rigling, Ray Baker, Jack Miller, et al. A great time with great people.

Mike was always one of my favorite visits from our factory partners. Not only his love of all things automotive, but his dedication to his job and his dealers was his legacy, but they only came second to his very dry and witty sense of humor. He will be missed but never forgotten.
