MICHAEL RING Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 28 to Oct. 30, 2022.
RING, Michael J Longtime Cambridge Attorney Ring, Michael J., of Andover, passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday, October 24, 2022, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. He was 76. Born in Cambridge to Frances (Hayes) Ring and Richard Ring, Mike was the eighth of nine children. He attended St. Mary's elementary and high school, and continued his education at Boston State College and Suffolk Law School. While at Boston State, he met the love of his life, Joan Costas, and spent the next 52 years by her side. Together they shared 50 years of marriage, three children, and two beloved grandchildren. Aside from his family, Mike's other great love was practicing law. He was an attorney in private practice for 47 years, the majority of which were spent working in his home city of Cambridge. In addition to his law practice, during his first 30 years of employment he was First Assistant Register of Deeds in Middlesex South District. Over the course of his long career as an attorney, and through his connections to the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Massachusetts Registers and Assistant Registers of Deeds Association, and the East Cambridge Business Association, he became a fixture in the East Cambridge legal community. Mike was well known for his generosity, compassion, and skillful ability to take on the most difficult cases, and he counted many attorneys, judges, clerks, clients, and innumerable professional associates among his friends. While his youth and the majority of his working life were spent in Cambridge, Mike enjoyed going home to the suburban quiet of Andover, where he lived with his family for 37 years. He coached each of his children in town sports leagues during their childhoods, and in his spare time he could be found working in his yard or, in his later days, playing in his backyard pool with his grandchildren. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Joan (Costas) Ring of Andover; his two daughters, Julie (David) Costello of Andover and Lesley (David) Meagher of Stoneham; his son, Michael Ring, Jr. of Boston; and his two grandchildren, Katherine Costello of Andover and Thomas Michael Meagher of Stoneham. He is also survived by two sisters, Frances (Ted) Christo of Middleton and Carol Lynde of Newton, NH; a brother, Ronald (Ernestine) Ring of Fort Myers, FL; two sisters-in-law, Carol Ring of Port Saint Lucie, FL, and Kathleen Schlemmer of Vero Beach, FL; and many nieces and nephews. Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, November 2, at the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Square) in SOMERVILLE, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A Prayer Service will be conducted in the funeral home at 6:30 pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Masks are preferred. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the Center for Innovation in Early Cancer Detection at Massachusetts General Hospital. George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Square) in Somerville, MA

I loved Michael- he was a friend, advisor and colleague for dozens of years. He was bright, funny, charismatic and true. He was a gentleman who respected everyone and loved his family. He was the kind of person everyone could be proud of and I admired him greatly. He was the lawyer that the Court trusted and relied on. He made me laugh and he enriched my life tremendously. I miss him and think of him so often.

I just heard about Mike's passing today.
Mike was my boss at the Registry of Deeds when I was fresh out of highschool.
Mike loved to laugh and so did I, we got along great. We went from having an employer/employee relationship to being really good friends. He was a good boss, friend & mentor. When I eventually left the Registry, it was Mike who helped me get into law school.

My condolences to the family. I'll miss our talks and his laugh.

To the Ring Family:

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your husband and father.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mike and doing business with him over the years.

No problem was too big to solve, no case was difficult to resolve no matter how contentious the facts were.

Mike Ring was a terrific lawyer and family man, of great character, who gracefully helped numerous clients, fellow lawyers, friends, and family through the most difficult times with class and dignity.

Mike, to say you will be missed is an understatement!

Rest in peace.

It is with deep sadness that I learned of Mike's passing. His humorous disposition and is willingness to help others will never be forgotten. Last week I called his office with a question and that is when I sadly learned that he was no longer with us. He is gone, but not forgotten.

Michael Ring started off as a customer at my family’s coffee shop but quickly became a family friend in no time. For the last 20 years, we would happily serve him his signature coffee- (medium, black with two sugars) while he shared his humorous anecdotes and stories - the perfect remedy after a hard day’s work.

I will never forget his legendary wit and charm; unrivaled work ethic and poise. He treated everyone he interacted with the utmost dignity and respect, and was always available to anyone that needed his help. I looked up to Mike and treasured his advise and friendship throughout the years.

Above all, Mike always talked fondly about his family and was especially elated with the addition of his two grand kids. Mike will be deeply missed and his spirit will live on forever in all of our hearts. My deepest condolences to his family. I hope you always hold on to all the special memories you shared together.

Michael was my first cousin, and although we hardly knew each other, I always heard what a genuinely nice and good man he was. I did have some conversations with him, always welcoming, and often very funny. My deepest sympathies to Joan and the family, and to his brothers and sisters. I am sure this is a difficult, but treasure the memories.

I´m a very old friend of Mike´s from grade school and high school at SMA. Many, many good memories of our times together. He was kind and gentle even as a tough guy. He of course would know exactly what I mean. I was so happy when I saw him at one of our class reunions and saw how well he did with his life. There we no guarantees for us kids from the hood. Since hearing the news today of his passing I have been sending him love and light for a joyful journey to the other side. God bless my old friend.
With much love ,

Dear Joan, Julie, Lesley and Michael,
I am very deeply saddened by the news of my dear friend and colleague, Mike's illness and passing. I knew Mike for over thirty years and will always remember his twinkly eyes and wonderful personality. Mike was not simply a brilliant attorney and historian, but he was also an outstanding human being, with a great sense of humor! Mike loved to talk about his family, culture, and the fun and everyday things that get us by. He was also a very caring and compassionate man who loved helping people. One such example, in our old days at Middlesex South, concerned the numerous potholes in Cambridge. Mike would often ask me to bring my camera (I am also a professional photographer), and accompany him to a site. There we would measure and photograph the potholes, and he would then send them to those in the City, who could actually fix them. In that way, Mike would bring justice to those who injured themselves. It seemed such a small thing to do, but in retrospect---not really.
That was Mike!
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help, in this very sad time.

I have know Mike since high school and since I’ve been in real estate in Cambridge since 1980, have done a lot of business with him over the years and often sought his advice which he gave freely . I’d see him at the Registry of Deeds and he was a larger than life personality among lots of businesses and individuals from Cambridge and always willing to pick up the phone whenever someone needed his advice . Big loss to the legal community and a super friend to many others . Miss him already

Joan, Julie, Leslie, and Michael Jr., Michael was the epitome of a Great Man, just like Gene my memories go back to Michael treating my sister and I as, the angels we were not. My memories of Michael and York Beach, and how he availed himself to the whims of a burgeoning clan of O'Brien's that he became a true favorite, and as we got older and maybe a little less rambunctious ( possibly ), I can distinctly recall friends often commenting on my handsome older 2nd cousin, and what a nice guy he is. That definitely doesn't begin to capture the essence of Michael.
Though we've gotten older and our interactions have been limited, I have nothing but the fondest memories of a Wonderful Man, whom was probably more instrumental than he knew, in my graduation for law school and attaining my Juris Doctorate.
God Bless Michael, and hopefully I'll see you on the other side.
