Michael Sanders, Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 12, 2024.
Michael Kenneth Sanders, Jr. peacefully left this earth on Thursday, February 8, 2024 to begin construction on his long anticipated moon colony.

He passed away from a sudden and aggressive infection leading to heart failure. He was 45 years old.

Completing his work earthside are his devoted parents, Carolyn and Michael K. Sanders, Sr., his sister Carrie, whom he adored, his former wife and friend, Jessica Sanders, and his beloved dog companion, Dixie.

Michael is also survived by five Aunts (Ann, Cathi, Cindy, Susie, Donna), four Uncles (Billy, Mark, Tony, Jim), eleven cousins (Meredith, Jimmy, Amanda, Jake, Katie, Mandy, Lizzy, Noah, Grace, AJ and Alex, who was also Michael's godson), two nephews (Nolan & Nyles) and too many friends, colleagues and extended family to count. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Genevieve & Donald Sanders, Sr. and Carolyn & William "Pop" Zaryski, and an uncle, Donald Sanders, Jr.

Michael was born on May 28, 1978 in Houma, Louisiana. He grew up in Houston, Texas, graduating from Cypress Falls High School (Class of 1996). He went on to become a proud Longhorn, graduating from the McCombs Business School at the University of Texas at Austin (Class of 2000). Following college, Michael moved to New York, NY in 2001 and enjoyed an accomplished career in Advertising Sales, working at the lauded firm Ogilvy & Mather and, later, AMC Networks. It was also in NYC that Michael met Jessica in 2004. They married in 2010 and enjoyed many challenging but ultimately rewarding years together. Despite their recent divorce, a deep and lasting friendship continued.

Professionally, Michael's entrepreneurial spirit took hold and in 2010, he left NYC and returned to Texas with Jessica. They went on to open two successful bars together in Austin, of which he was enormously proud. Following his years of work in hospitality, Michael eventually settled back in New Orleans and leveraged his numerous talents, first in overseeing a gorgeous and inspired re-design of his grandparents former 50+ year old home and then, in recent years, to projects ranging from retail sales to real estate to consulting.

He was a well-liked, trusted and generous neighbor to those who shared the street with him and the Sanders family home. Michael was a lifelong Type 1 diabetic and an advocate for others who were as determined as he was to live fully with their diagnosis.

There was no opinion or emotion left unexpressed by Michael, and often at top volume. He was smart, wickedly funny, a fantastic dancer and cook, stylish, particular and exacting in his excellent taste and a devoted fan of the New Orleans Saints and Houston Astros. He was always the consummate host and entertainer. He could talk to or befriend anyone - he simply never knew a stranger, regardless of where he went in his many travels around the world.

A proper obituary is ideally a full and honest accounting of one's life. It's true that The Michael Show could be a comedy or a drama depending on the day; regardless, we are left feeling so fortunate to have had a ticket.

Rest long and rest well, Michael. You are fiercely loved just as you fiercely loved us. You are missed here. We'll see you on the moon. Save a corner seat for us.

A celebration for Michael will be held on Saturday, May 4th, 2024 in Houston, Texas. Details to follow.

Michael was one of a kind. Never afraid to share his opinion, but would also share the shirt off his back. He felt and thought deeply and challenged me at times. I appreciated that about Michael. I miss his energy.
Also- not sure if it's appropriate to ask here...but was curious about celebration details on 5/4. Thank you.

Michael is not only my nephew but my friend. I will miss him more than words can say. He will never be forgotten, he lived so large he left mark everywhere he went.
Michael loved big and was loved big. He loves his Eon and I love him more.
Our lives will go on but the fact that he isn´t here with us is one I will never get used to and I don´t like one bit. We weren´t finished yet.
Rest well Michael, until meet again.
XOXO

I´ve had to seriously ponder on my memories and condolences because Michael is such a large part of our family, and he needs to be given proper kudos. I only knew Michael the last 15 years of his life as I came into the family later, but as anyone who knows him would know, he embraced me and my children like we´d always been there, and I was tremendously grateful for that. He was the kind of guy who lived life out loud with an opinion on just about everything you could throw at him, but also willing to listen to your side. I admired his intelligence, his style, and his fierce loyalty to the people he loved. There were so many fun times over the years, but one of the best times was when Billy and I visited Michael and Jessica´s new bar in Austin, and he and Jessica made their best drinks for us...what happens at Drink.Well stays at Drink.Well....but we had a lot of fun because Michael was determined that we would.
I suppose if I have learned anything from Michael, it´s that you just keep going. Life is hard and sometimes throws you curveballs, but you keep going. He did until he couldn´t. We will never fill the void that he has left; however, what he has left with us will forever shape us. We are a better family because he was part of us.

Michael was a vivacious person with a wicked sense of humor. I am terribly saddened to hear of his sudden death. His characteristic sarcasm always brightened our meetings...Peace be with you all.

To my friend Micheal-We were new friends and, even though we had a little drama, I will always consider you my friend. Thank you for trusting me to walk Dixie for you. I always looked forward to spending time with her. And I always looked forward to talking to and laughing with you. One of my fondest memories of you was when we walked Dixie together. You made me laugh the whole time. I wish we would have had more time to be friends, but I am happy for the time we had and feel blessed to have known you. I will miss you. Jessica Street will never be the same without you.

I feel fortunate to have met Michael through Carrie, Lynn and Mike. I was impressed with Michael's determination to do anything but especially his vision of remodeling his grandparents home. Michael's kindness and generosity will be greatly missed.

Michael, there was no one like you and (thank goodness for that I guess). You are were so loved and special and just a real loyal friend. I will miss your humor and your generosity. You'd give the shirt off your back if someone needed it. It's ironic that you died of a heart thing considering how many heart attacks you gave Jess over the years. Anyway, hang tough friend. I will miss you.

Michael is my neighbor and my friend. He will definitely be missed.!! I´ll never forget him texting me on a random night at 9 PM asking to borrow tinfoil and then put it in my mailbox the next day. Or when the hurricane came he, he went home to Tx and he said Jenn I have so much food in my freezer if you want it ;). And he would always text me to pick up his packages when he went out of town and then he would send me something thanking me.
He was a doll. He is loved by all of us on Jessica St and Arlene in Metairie.
My daughter and her friend absolutely loved hanging out at Mr. Mike´s with Dixie. RIP my friend
