Michael Savage Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 5, 2024.
Michael Gerard Savage, aged 71, of Binghamton, New York, passed away peacefully on Feb 3, 2024 at Portsmouth, Virginia surrounded by his family. Born in Flushing, New York on December 3, 1952 to Richard & Mary Savage. Michael was known for his open door leadership in a number of Management roles from Sales to Environmental work, was a fan of Baseball from birth having played in a number of Little League national championships and going on to coach Baseball, Basketball, and Softball for his children. He was a golfer, a die hard Buffalo Bills fan, and loved watching his grandchildren in their respective athletics more than anything in the world.

Michael was a kind spirit who loved making any stranger a friend, and was deeply involved in his later years in fundraising and supporting charities, having launched the MJ & BJ Morning Show Charity Golf Tournament in the late 1990's in Tampa Florida, and doing BBQ fundraisers for local churches. He will be remembered for his persistence in keeping up with friends, checking in on family, and always being the connective glue between the communities and worlds he was able to live in. He chose to drive Uber in his later years which gave him time to meet new friends, and fill his days being of help to the community. From being "Mike the Tile Guy" in his early years building out New York Carpet world in Florida, to "Mike the Uber Driver"... taking off into his final orbit, he was loved everywhere he interacted with people.

Michael is predeceased by his father Richard Savage, and mother Mary (Betty) Savage of Binghamton/ Kerry Ireland, along with loving sister Elizabeth Mollo (Savage) and brother in law Richard Correll. Michael was husband of 45 years to Phyllis C Savage (Chilletti), father to Shelly Lemos (Scott), Andrea McCloud, Michael Savage (Valerie), Rocco Savage (Nikole), and Kristen Savage. He was eldest brother to his siblings Bridget Savage Jones, Richard Savage (Mary), Roger Savage (Marge Case), Kathleen Roberts (Bill), Catherine Correll, and Paul Mollo. He is also survived by his adoring grandchildren, Anna, Marra, Julia, Emma, Evan, Corbin, Tommy, Kellyn, Keaton, Chloe, Maya, Carmen, and 3 great grandchildren. He will also be missed by numerous friends and "adopted children" who were like family to him.

A celebration of Michael's life will be held on July 5, 2024 in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area. Details to be posted once the family has made arrangements. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Portsmouth Naval Hospital for their steadfast work, flexibility, and support in Michael's final days. Dr Olsen and her team were impeccable in their care and professionalism. Their entire team made a very difficult situation easier and allowed for the presence of family above and beyond the norm. We thank them and are eternally grateful. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Heart Association.

Michael Savage's legacy of kindness, family first, efforts to nourish and maintain all the meaningful connections in life, and love, will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.

Mr. Micheal and I met during the time he was driving Uber . I rode with him several times a week for about a year and a half. And over this period of time we became friends he shared lots of stories we talked about Family , his grandchildren were always one of the biggest blessings in his life.
He shared with me lots of old time stories... A lot of times I would be riding with him and he would take a call from his granddaughter, Caitlyn ... And talk about all the rest about baseball games and then going to college and silly little cute wake up calls in the middle of the night just to say they loved him! He was definitely a man of kindness will be forever greatly missed

Michael (pops) Savage was like a father to me since I was 8 years old. He taught me many things about being a man and father. I owe a lot of what my relationships with my kids have turned out to be to Pops. Unknowingly he taught me how to talk to my kids about issues in their lives and how to mitigate challenges that I had with them. He also brought my best friend to Virginia 37 years ago, to which I am very grateful for. I have many great memories with pops one of which was the maiden voyage of my first boat. He was thrilled to be apart of that milestone and I was happy to have him there. I will always be grateful for the love he showed me and my daughters. I love you pops and will never forget you or the lessons you taught me.

Sincere sympathy to all of Mike´s family and friends. I think I knew him for 60 years or more. The Savage family and the Fox/Heslin/McNamara/Hahn go waaay back. We all swam in the river together as kids, and visited many of the same establishments as we got older. And, to top it off, Mike was behind the bar at the State Line Tavern on 3/17/81 (St. Patrick's Day) when my now-wife and I shared our first kiss.
I was so happy to reconnect a few years ago when he and his family visited Lake Norman.

RIP, old friend.

My father was a man who loved to connect. As he passed it was easy to see that he maintained love as best he knew how - because he was surrounded by room full of family and friends. The staff at the hospital was moved by the love in the room, and his daily calls and weekly check ins with everyone he knew made sure that the connections and love were always there.
