I was one of his students and not a good artist, but when I found out that he needed volunteers to help him create this amazing vision in a mural at Chicano Park I signed up!! We worked in this mural the whole summer from morning to night and it was incredible. Michael was funny and an inspiration to us all. My sincere condolences to his beautiful family!
I am so sorry....

I was in the Border Art Workshop/Taller de Arte Fronterizo with Michael. I lived below him in the apartments in Imperial Beach. I have many memories of Michal's unstoppable energy and working on projects with him at Southwestern and at the Centro Cultural de la Raza. Michael was a catalytic presence connecting many artists and communities. He encouraged and inspired countless artists nationally and internationally and supported the rights of artists and especially muralists. This is a great loss.

My first memory of Michael is him selling us candy at the bus stop at First and J Street before (Junior High) School. My last is stopping to chat with him for a few minutes as I was running down First Avenue a couple years ago. He accomplished so much in the span between. Condolences to all the family. This is so very sad.

Dear Family of Michael,
My sincere sympathy to you for the loss of Michael. I went to high school with him, and then later I took art classes at Southwestern - and he was the teacher!
I was not a very good artist, but I did learn from him and his individual approach to teaching. I was a young single mother at the time (the early 70's) and one time I could not find child care - so I took my young daughter to class with me.
Michael gave me an "A" for the day.
Later, I learned from Michael about an old Victorian house that was going to be torn down in CV, and he worked with me to save the house from demolition and relocate the house. I still live in the old Victorian house on Second Ave - which is now a local historic site as one of Chula Vista's original orchard houses.
My sympathy goes out to his sister Judy who was also my classmate, his mother , wife and children. He made the world a better place through his work.
God bless you all. Corinne McCall
PS: I also loved the Obama portraits on First Ave!
