Michael Scholl Obituary

Michael "Mike" Ayres Scholl April 19, 1947 - August 6, 2025

Michael "Mike" Ayres Scholl, a beloved father, husband, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 78 after a brief battle with cancer. Born in San Antonio on April 19, 1947, to Patricia McGee Scholl and Henry Ayres Scholl, Mike's life was a testament to enduring family bonds, cherished friendships, and a profound appreciation for nature and craftsmanship.

As the second oldest of his siblings, Mike shared his formative years in San Antonio with his brothers Denny and Timothy, and his older sister Anne. The family endured the sorrowful loss of young Timothy early in life. Mike was also preceded in death by his sister Anne. Their youth was rich with shared adventures, fostering a deep love for games, fishing, history, and hunting-passions Mike carried throughout his life. Family time at their lake house and coastal retreat instilled in him a special fondness for these sanctuaries, traditions he lovingly continued with his own daughters, Ashley and Morgan. Lake Diversion held a particularly sacred place in his heart, representing five generations of cherished memories. He also delighted in taking his children to the coast, instilling in them a lifelong affection for Port Aransas.

In his younger years, Mike and his beloved wife, Kathy, explored various coastal areas across the U.S. and Mexico while fishing and swimming. They also enjoyed skiing in the mountains, traveling abroad, and visiting big cities for great wine and dining experiences, often including their children in these travels and holiday gatherings. Mike instilled his love for music and concerts in his children. He made it a point to see the Rolling Stones every time they were on tour, often turning the concert into a vacation. Mike loved sports; he coached basketball and softball for many of Morgan's formative years. Fantasy Football Sunday was his ritual. In later life, his travels gravitated primarily to his cherished havens of Lake Diversion and Port Aransas, where he found solace in relaxation, reading, connecting with nature, engaging in spirited backgammon games, cooking, fishing, and spending invaluable time with family, friends, and his beloved dogs. He held a special fondness for the Fourth of July and Memorial Day weekends.

Mike's educational journey included Mount Sacred Heart, St. Pius X, Central Catholic High School, and ultimately Alamo Heights High School, where he showcased his talent on the basketball court during his senior year. It was there he gained the nickname "Worm" as he would worm his way to the basket. He pursued higher education at The University of Texas, where he was a proud member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. These foundational years were instrumental in forging many of his lifelong friendships, marked by curious nicknames and adventures that were, as his friends fondly recall, "wild beyond belief."

Professionally, Mike found immense pride in his company, M.A. Scholl Construction. He possessed a true passion for designing and constructing spectacular homes for his clients, always collaborating with San Antonio's finest crews and companies. He deeply valued their contributions, recognizing that their dedication made his projects truly exceptional. He also held a high regard for the sales advice and unwavering friendship of Nancy Oberman.

In lieu of traditional pallbearers, Mike wished to extend his heartfelt gratitude to all his friends, acknowledging the profound blessing of their special friendships. He particularly cherished the "Good Ole' Guys," including the husbands of the Book Club Girls: Tom Bagby, Mote Baird, the late Steve Lee, Billy Osborn, Paul Pace, the late Bill West, and Bob Worth. His lifelong companions from childhood through college and beyond included Jim Alexander, the late Johnny Ball, Jimmy Baxter, the late Albert Biedenharn, the late Bob Carter, Vance Hobbs, John Kimball, Bob Kent, Wade Kilpatrick, Buddy Kinder, the late Warren Matthews, the late Pat Molak, the late Rob Lippencott, Joe Lucia, George Sharman, Larry Swazye, David Watkins, the late Frank Turner, and his trusted friend and business partner, Warren Wilkinson. He also treasured his fishing buddies, Kyle Ross, Frankie "D," and Erik Olsen. Many family members and friends shared the joy of trying to catch "first, biggest, most species," creating stories that will be recounted with love. Mike truly appreciated the outpouring of calls and visits from those who knew him and had the chance to connect during his illness.

In keeping with Mike's jovial spirit, who "always liked a party and dreaded funerals," a memorial celebration of his life will be held, with the date to be determined and announced.

Mike is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Kathryn Gregg Scholl; his cherished daughters and sons-in-law, Ashley and West Stone, and Morgan Scholl and Casey Carter. He also leaves behind his beloved Stone grandchildren: Tanner, Georgia, Stella, and Wyatt; his brother Dennis Scholl and his daughter Kasey Scholl Tatum and her family; his nephew Brian Ford, his wife Julie, and their daughter Taylor; and his sister-in-law Krys Gregg Turner and her children Keri Atkins (and her husband Jimmy) and Douglas Kahanek (and his wife Leigh Anne).

Mike "Worm" Scholl enjoyed life to the hilt. Any one of his friends can tell lots of funny stories about their adventures (and misadventures) with Worm. Just hanging around him guaranteed an interesting time and good laughs.

He was a hard working, superb builder and honest to the core. He oversaw the restoration of our home and he made sure that every sub and every supplier did exactly what they were supposed to do.

Mike loved his family and was so proud of each one of them. When one of his daughters or grandchildren did something special, his friends heard about it.

Mike was one-of-a-kind; we´ll miss him.
