Michael Shannon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 29, 2023.
Dr. Michael William Shannon, 79, passed away on August 13, 2023. Born on April 18, 1944, in Emporia, Kansas, Dr. Shannon was a loving and devoted family man and pediatrician. Dr. Shannon's journey to a career in medicine began at Madison Elementary in Norman, OK and Portales High School in Portales, NM, where he graduated as valedictorian. He went on to attend Kansas University and graduated from Eastern New Mexico University. Dr. Shannon graduated from Northwestern Medical School in Chicago and completed his residency at Children's Hospital Los Angeles before opening a practice in Mission Viejo, CA in 1973.

Over the course of more than 40 years, Dr. Shannon cared for thousands of families throughout the Orange County area and across the country. Dr. Shannon was known for his kind and compassionate nature. He had a genuine love for helping others and made everyone he encountered feel cherished and worthy. He had a zest for life and his positive energy was infectious.

Though Dr. Shannon poured countless hours into his patients, even beyond retirement, he never missed an opportunity to be with his family and friends and enjoy life. He loved watching his grandsons play football and baseball and enjoyed spending time with his entire family, adventuring in the outdoors, and travelling throughout the country and the world. He was passionate about sports, music, Native American art, and trains. He was an avid Jayhawk basketball and Sooner football fan, but his wardrobe had recently transitioned to burnt orange and he could be heard on occasion saying "Hook 'Em".

Dr. Shannon leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, son Michael A, daughter-in-law Samantha, grandsons Spencer and Owen, daughter Vanessa, brother Mark, sister-in-law Cynthia, nieces Caroline, Jessica, and Shannon, and nephew Christopher. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Vera, his parents Gail and Helen, his in-laws Frank and Frida, and his sister-in-law Regina.

Dr. Shannon's warm and caring nature made a lasting impact on all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Dr. Shannon will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched; his memory will be forever cherished and his legacy of kindness and love will live on and continue to inspire others.

Per Dr Shannon's wishes, there will be no service at this time.

I was actually looking up to see if Dr. Shannon was still practicing as I was going to recommend him on a forum. 3 of my children were under his care for a couple of years before I moved to Hawaii, but I tell other moms stories about him at least a few times a year for the last 8 yrs here in Hawaii. I´ve since been searching for another doctor like him(unsuccessfully ) He was such a special doctor who has such a sound common sense between Western medicine and Holistic. I appreciated so much how he supported me and my decisions for my kids. Giving me honest advice and because of that, I trusted him so much. Even telling me what to do to go around his staff when they were being aggressive and pushy. He was so positive and funny. "My finger hurts when I do this " .... "Well, then don´t do that !" Hahaha
I till this day, religiously give our entire family Vitamin D3 and rub coconut oil and peppermint for fevers ... because it works.
What a special man and an extraordinary doctor. May his legacy live on to inspire future doctors to be more like him.

Such an amazing doctor and man. We are the parents of triplets who were born prematurely and needed to spend about a month in the NICU before going home. When we asked the nurses at the NICU to recommend a Pediatrician, it was unanimous....Dr. Shannon! We worked with him until his retirement and continued to communicate even after. What a wonderful doctor and person! RIP.

Dr. Shannon was my Pediatrician in California and was a great physician. When I became a mom (living in Texas) I would routinely reach out to Dr. Shannon with questions/concerns and we could chat about them over the phone or by text/email. I sure miss getting to call/text with my random medical questions or complex patient cases.

I remember Dr. Shannon as a kind, caring, loving and respectful Doc. He always comes in rounding for his babies at the hospital with a smile on his face, calm, vibrant, always positive and even humming and just joyful. He is very down to earth and chill. You can tell that he loved all the babies and families he cared for. He always had great stories to share and advice for new Moms and nurses. He is so dedicated with his patients that he would meet with the family at the parking lot or any safe location when they have grave concerns about their babies, even after hours, just to put them at ease and check on his babies he is caring for. He is truly one of the, if not the best and most genuine Pediatricians out there who practiced out of his heart. What a privilege to have known him. RIP Dr. Shannon. I hope you are surfing the waves and enjoying the horizon.

Dr. Shannon was the pediatrician for my three sons and they all liked him very much. He made it very comfortable always for everyone when my oldest son was about 16 he told me he thought it was time for him to stop seeing a pediatrician! Thank you Dr. Shannon for all your years of caring for your patience.

Dr Shannon was all three of our kids´ doctor. I´ll never forget that when he held my son Jonathan, 4 days old, he warned us not to do everything for Jonathan as he grew up. He has 2 older sisters and a mom, and Dr Shannon ("he´ll have 3 moms!") wanted us to let Jonathan try to do stuff on his own, and not speak for him or do things for him because it would affect his self esteem and his ability to try new things. He was right on. Wish we´d listened and acted on his words. Dr Shannon was warm, funny, loving and we trusted him. Wish our insurance would have let our kids stay with him all the way to age 18.

Dr. Shannon was my pediatrician as well as both of our girls. He always had a smile on his face and was genuinely happy to see us when he opened the office door. Dr. Shannon would say, "Oh, my favorite girls came to see me" and would give us all a BIG Hug. It put us at ease and made us happy. Through the 21 years of office visits with our girls, he built my confidence as a mom and always reassured me with his calming, words of wisdom and sound, practical advice that everything was going to be OK and gave the best natural remedies. I appreciated how he gently handled my concerns about vaccines, sicknesses and sometimes my irrational fears around medical issues I would hear on the news. I remember early on as a new mom, when our oldest daughter was under a year old, I brought her in for an upper respiratory infection. In the news at that time, was reports of people finding Anthrax in envelopes being distributed to office and various government buildings. After he examined my daughter and explained the treatment plan, he asked me if I had any questions or concerns. I sighed and it was like I had "worried about Anthrax" written across my forehead. He patted my knees and said, "Don't worry Carrie, it's not Anthrax." We both laughed. Through the years, we had many more moments like that, and he always calmed my fears and made me laugh about it.

Dr. Shannon was "one of a kind", wonderful man and an incredible doctor. The mold was broken after the good Lord made him, with the exception of his son, Dr. Michael Shannon, DDS. He set the bar really high for doctors and he will not be replaced in my mind. Dr. Shannon, thank you for being an inspiration to me, taking such great care of me and our girls, and guiding me to be a good mom. It has been a true honor and you are incredibly missed!

Had a crash c-section early in May 1994 and I had not picked a pediatrician yet. The neonatologist at CHOC recommended Dr. Shannon. And our first meeting he came in to the room with hair down to his shoulder, jeans and cowboy boots on. Soft spoken, kind and took my son right out of my arms and held him the entire appointment. He soon became a trusted doctor and a resource that I reached out to for 29 years, up until his death, the saddest day was when he retired! Loved him and will miss him and his easy going conservative manner. A true gem in the world of medicine. Love you Dr. Shannon

When I first met Mike Shannon 31 years ago, I was fresh out of my pediatric chief residency and had recently moved to Laguna Niguel. At that time I was fortunate to be hired into his practice, Saddleback Pediatrics, and was so thankful to have had Mike as an enthusiastic supporter and mentor. It was the days, when as pediatricians, we did everything, from seeing patients in the office, to going to deliveries at all hours and also admitting and taking care of the sickest kids in the hospital. It was a busy life and Mike helped show me the ropes. He was a very caring person and always showed great compassion, kindness and patience towards all. Mike could make anyone feel comfortable with his quick smile and amazing warmth. After I left Saddleback Pediatrics and started Sea View Pediatrics with Andy Blumberg, we were blessed to have Mike join us seven months later. He brought his experience and wisdom, along with his very large following of devoted families, which helped Sea View to grow quickly. Mike and I continued to build Sea View, initially together, but then with other wonderful partners along the way. We were always very fortunate to have the steady support of each other, our amazing physicians and staff. I will always be grateful that we were able to have had this journey together. Rest in peace Mike.

Dr. Shannon was my daughter´s first pediatrician as an infant, shortly before his retirement. He was always so knowledgeable, warm, gentle and kind and had a way of easing our anxiety with his humor while my husband and I were figuring out how to our our preemie. I´ll always be grateful to Dr. Shannon for being a wonderful doctor and person.

Dr. Shannon was my pediatrician through the 80´s and he was such a wonderful, compassionate, brilliant and kind doctor! I remember his hair style during the 80´s. He was also my kid´s pediatrician until he retired. I love the balm he made and the tips about natural plants and herbs to help us such as oregano, and cinnamon. He will be greatly missed and always remembered! He´s gone way too soon! Prayers to his family and loved ones!

This man helped me raise my daughters to be thoughtful and health conscious and I will forever hold him on my heart! He was the absolute best pediatrician and always gave us lots of time and attention. He never rushed me. We brought the iPad to our last appointment so my daughter in college could say congratulations on his retirement. He was loved and he will be missed!!

Dr. Shannon was a gift to all! He cared for this patients like they were his own children and grandchildren. Whenever I left the dr. office with one of my 4 young children, he made me feel like I was the best mom and doing such an incredible job raising these young kids. He never trumped my opinions or decisions but laid out options for treatment or care and ultimately put the decision on me, the parent. The way he used God given natural reasources to heal our bodies and prevent illness was so wise and way ahead of his time. From sharing with us all the benefits of Crisco (before coconut oil was a thing) to Vitamin D, to garlic drops, all very so helpful and tried and true benefits! He also strongly encouraged me to keep my boys home from full time school until they were 6 years old. I am forever grateful for that advice as they are now 16 and 18 (sophomore and senior) and thriving! He will be deeply missed not not forgotten! Praying for the whole Shannon family as you grieve and I hope these notes are an encouragement to keep his legacy on and know that our world is a better place and forever changed because of Dr. Shannon

I had the pleasure of working for Dr Shannon in the late 70´s into the 80´s. Loved by many is an understatement. He was compassionate, caring, and invested in anything he did. I´m proud to say we became friends that continued after his retirement. I could always count on him for personal and professional advice. I´m so sad to hear of his passing. He actually moved to the area in Northern California that my daughter lives. I always thought we would have more visits. Truly a very special man... he will he missed

WOW! What to say about Michael Shannon! He was the BEST, most caring and love doctor you could ever want for your children. My four children grew up with him and we all loved him. When they were nervous, he would calm them, when they were shy, he would make them laugh, he was the BEST! He was the best doctor around and I am so glad we could call him ours. He will be soo soo missed by our family.

Simply the kindest, most loving pediatrician. Was my twins´ first doctor and brought so much ease and knowledge. When we moved halfway across the world, he insisted we keep in touch, and asked to email him any concerns, which I often did! You will be so missed, Dr Shannon.

Dr. Shannon was my doctor when I was a kid. He was there when I was born and I remember always drawing him purple cows to give him at my doctor appointments. He let me shadow him when I was an undergraduate student and I wrote about him in my personal statement for medical school. I am currently in my 4th year of medical school on my pediatric emergency medicine rotation as I read the news of his passing. He had a huge influence on my life and I am so grateful he was my doctor.

Dr Shannon was the pediatrician I switched to when the one I was using couldn´t help me with my daughters ear infections. We switched, he prescribed garlic drops, and voila! She got better! (She´s now 24) He always made me feel special, and over the years he even made a couple house calls when we needed help, and ALWAYS answered the phone if I called. I always will remember his big hugs and smiles. He loved finding alternative ways to help and didn´t like big pharma! Whenever I see a Hawaiian shirt, I´ll think of him with joy in my heart. He was so good to our family of 7! We love you Dr Shannon! You are RADICAL!!

I first met Dr. Shannon in 2011 when he was my patient, after a traumatic car accident. He was hospitalized for some 45 days which provided many of us the opportunity to get to know this special human. Some of us were blessed to have stayed connected long after he was discharged. It is an honor to call him my friend, his kind heart and loving ways will be with me forever.

Mike was my beloved cousin along with his brother Mark and my brother Chuck. We had many holidays in Hamilton, Kansas, a very small rural town where our grandmother and uncle owned a farm and raised Black Angus cattle. We loved going to the farm, riding Old Dan, playing in the hay, chasing chickens, feeding the cattle from the hay rack pulled by Dick and Doll, enjoying rides on the old tractor. We loved our short bursts of life here and I think it gave us a grounding that we never forgot. Those days became our past as we all went on to college, chose our careers and headed full speed into professional life. As we elected to live in different areas of the country our interactions became fewer and fewer. When Mark called to tell me of Mike´s passing, I was devastated. It has been a comfort, however, to read of all Mike meant to people and all of his efforts to make the lives of children and their parents easier to navigate. Rest in peace, dear Cousin Mike! You truly did make a difference!!!!!!!

I joined Mike at his original pediatric practice in 1980 and stayed for 5 years. He was just as good a pediatrician as all the patients share here. He truly practiced with heart and compassion.

But he was also a funny , smart and thoughtful colleague. I enjoyed working beside him, just remember how sometimes after lunch he would drop snacks on my work station.

Most of all he adored his kids, he always sounded extra proud of them.

Dr. Shannon was and is my all-time favorite physician. In 1997 we had triplets and had interviewed Dr. Shannon prior to our children being born. We immediately fell in love with his laid back attitude, Hawaiian shirt and tennis shoes. We loved his TN gear as I was a Volunteer fan living in SoCal. I remember one of our first newborn visits when I fussed at Dr. Shannon for carrying one my four-pound babies with one hand. He just scooped up my babies with one hand to go to the scale. Of course he was in control and just smiled when I asked him (probably told him) to be careful with my babies! I actually have a lot of funny stories about visits with Dr. Shannon, but my sweetest memories are when he would start our visits with talking to me as the Mom. How was I? Was my husband pitching in? Was I getting any sleep? Had I left my three kids at home with my husband alone? He gave kind advice, like Grandmas mean well, but their not always right. He was as concerned for my well being as he was for my children. Sometimes those visits were more for me than our children. My husband and I trusted him 100%. We moved back to TN in 2006, but kept in touch with Dr. Shannon, sending pics and updates about our now adult children. I can truly say that Dr. Shannon was a pivotal presence for us as we navigated the world of having three babies at once. I'm sad for his family, but hope that you all know that he made a huge difference in my life. Sending hugs to all that adored him as much as we did.

Dr. Shannon was my pediatrician and 25 years later he was my kids´ doctor as well. I remember him from a child´s perspective as larger than life with curly hair and cowboy boots. When I was lucky enough to bring my own children to see him, his kind demeanor and genuine care for my kids was an incredible blessing. Thank you Dr. Shannon!

Dr. Shannon was my pediatrician and also treated my son for a few years before retiring. His calm, caring nature and the way he listened to parents made trips to the doctor´s office less stressful. It was always a joy to see him, regardless of the situation that brought us in.

The first time I met Dr. Shannon was going with my sister to take her son to see him!
I will always remember his cowboy boots .
Many years later he became my daughter´s pediatrician , and Dr Shannon became her mentor. Today she is a PA in family medicine.
My son too became a patient of Dr .Shannon and by that time he was sporting the more beach look!
He swore by crisco!
Everyone went to Dr.Shannon!
We absolutely loved him!
It was a privilege to have him care for my children and I´m honored to say that he was part of our lives !
We were really bummed when he retired.
Fortunately we had his son Dr.Mike follow in his dads footsteps into the pediatric medical field!
My son had the best dental experience as a child and we too were sad when my son was too old to continue at a pediatric dentist!
Thank you Dr. Shannon for being such an incredible man and Doc in my children´s lives!
You truly were a legend!!

I was a nervous new mom and I was told that I could interview a pediatrician before assigning my newborn to a dr. I walked into dr. Shannon´s office and he came out to great me wearing a Hawaiian shirt and cowboy boots. I knew then that he would be great for me. I needed a pediatrician that was grounded and calming because I was terrified to become a mom. He often gave me terrific advice for my infants that was often life advice that I hold close to my heart to this day. So grateful to have met him and been able to be a patient of his. Rest in glory Dr. Shannon!

Dr. Shannon was my wife´s pediatrician. When we had 2 daughters, Dr. Shannon took care of them too. He was the best. Calm, patient, listen, and common sense approach to treating the kids.

One night Dr. Shannon went to John Wayne airport to pick up his brother who was flying into town. I´m a local paramedic and there was a medical emergency on the flight. As we arrived at the terminal, I saw Dr Shannon and we said hello. The patient was brought to us and Dr Shannon watched me do my assessment and treat the patient. I looked over at him and said "how am I doing doc?"

He chuckled and said "great. I´d be happy to have you take care of me."

Gonna miss you Dr Shannon.

Dr. Shannon was one of the few medical experiences in which I have fond memories. He cared for me as a child when I had a mystery illness. While most of my experiences were centered around uncertainty, poking, and prodding Dr. Shannon was a bright spot. I immediately smile when I hear his name. I am now a healthy 40 year old woman with a great life. Thank you, Dr. Shannon, for giving me the gift of comfort during a scary time. You were a great man who touched many lives. And you helped us smile along the way. Rest in peace.

Ouch. This really stings. We switched over to Sea View when we had a son specifically because we knew Dr. Shannon was our guy. We were always on the same page and I felt a warm sense of safety in his office when he visited with any of our kids. Our appointments felt more like just a check in as opposed to our kids getting a check up with their doctor. When he retired, we felt a bit of displacement, and if I'm true, we still do so many years later. No one can or will ever replace him. We also see his son as our kids' dentist and I always ask for updates on our Dr. Shannon. All our love to Dr. Shannon's favorite people. Xoxo

My memory was calling Dr Shannon about my daughter. He was not taking any new patients unless they were newborn. I called him and left him a message. I told him he was my pediatrician and my husbands when we were little. My daughter was having bad ear infections that would not clear up. He called me right back and told me to meet him in his office as he wanted to see her ears infected. He was just that kind of person, needless to say he added my daughter as a patient. He was more than just a DR!! Love, prayers, and peace to his family

One of a kind doctor and man. So grateful he was our family´s pediatrician. Always energetic patient and comforting. I have him to thank for so many child rearing tips. One of my favorite tips of his is the tub of Crisco instead of diaper ointments. My kids never had a rash and the money I saved was huge. My thoughts go out to his family as I know he will be missed.

i´m not sure any pediatrician was as loved as dr. shannon. not only did he give my children the best most loving care, he affirmed me as a new parent when i needed it the most. at our last appointment before he retired, i told him i think i could find a new husband that i love and adore faster than a pediatrician i love and adore as much as him. since then my words have been proven true, there is none like him. he was so sweet to all of his patients, i had another baby after he retired and he met us at a park for a `check up´ and always answered my questions regarding health concerns in my family. i only have fond memories of him and i will speak of his greatness any chance i get.

Dr. Shannon has forever impacted my life as a mom. He was the pediatrician for my two oldest boys. Born in 2012 and 2014. The first years as a mom are tricky to navigate. Dr. Shannon helped me so much. He was always calm and caring. I love how he made me feel important as the mother by always listening to what I had to say. I felt like my kids were truly cared for by him. He was the most amazing doctor I have ever come across. I still talk about things he told me to other moms with little babies today. Several mornings each year Mike, Rosemary Stevens (also a doc) and I (a civilian) would bring up the rear of the Advanced Ride - where we ate a lot of dust as we explored many of our country´s and world´s critical problems. By the time we headed back to the barn, we were confident we had pretty much nailed the answers.

Mike´s strong values and empathetic way of engaging led us to encourage our son, Kevin, and daughter, Gretchen, to spend as much time as possible with the Shannon´s. This led to the crazy Annual Scramble Golf Tournament, where the kids were all assigned to teams captained by Fathers from other families. Many life lessons got passed along during these events. Plus, the value of intense physical activity and good sportsmanship were demonstrated daily by example on the Volleyball Court before dinner.

We are especially grateful that the Watters Family had the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely breakfast with Mike in San Clemente on our drive back to Silicon Valley from San Diego - just before COVID shut all of us down.

Our hearts go out to everyone in Doc´s wonderful family. Know that we miss him, too. What a guy!

Dr Shannon was my doctor as a pediatrician and I still remember him at 40 years old. His kindness and care for his patients and our community will not be forgotten. When i has children of my own, my first idea was to search for him and see if he was still working. Much love to his family.

I remember this day when Dr. Shannon asked me to take him a picture with my kids because he was retiring, he was just waiting for us to say goodbye. Dr. Shannon, a wise and wonderful man who taught me to raise my children healthy and strong in a purely natural and organic way.
We will miss you deeply Dr. Shannon

Michael is greatly respected and remembered as the outstanding pediatrician for our four children: Alina, Conrad, and Andy Mazeika. He was part of the medical staff at Mission Hospital in its original and earliest days in the 1980's. He transformed doctor visits into enjoyable play sessions at his Mission Viejo office. He was a wonderful, empathetic , happy member, and valuable asset to our community. God bless him .

I had the great honor of working along side Dr. Shannon for almost 2 decades. I started my career with him at SeaView Pediatrics as a 19 year old kid and had grown into the man I am today under his tutelage. Much of the best parts of who I am come from him. Dr. Shannon taught me so many life lessons and will continue on within me as well as being passed on to my children. One thing that I will always remember about Dr. Shannon is that he had such a presence about him that was so calming and soothing, it didn´t matter what state of mind you were in. You always felt on top of the world when you were with him. His heart was as pure as they come and he has inspired all of those who have been blessed to come across his path. Dr. Shannon will be truly missed. My deepest condolences to the Shannon family.
PS
One of my fondest memories of Dr. Shannon was hanging out at his house in San Clemente for our company Christmas party. Dr. Shannon always made you feel at home. It was always such a beautiful time.
